Joined The Citadel: August 2018

Derek Harris joined The Citadel School of Engineering’s Leadership Team in August 2018 as the Director for Student Engagement, Projects, & Finance, and is also tasked with providing special assistance to the Dean and Dean's Office.

Derek comes to the School of Engineering with over 10 years of prior experience in higher-education. In 2007, Derek was appointed as the Director of Student Advocacy at the University of Central Florida and worked with elected officials, senior university leaders, and student agencies throughout the state of Florida on a number of issues, including mental health awareness, limiting tuition increases, text-book affordability, and Florida Bright-Future reform. In addition to his role as Director of Student Advocacy, Derek served on several task-force groups, advisory boards, and policy councils to the university.

Derek was hired at Valencia College in Orlando, Florida in 2008, where he spent four years in management and student services, and another year in large scale university/college events.  In addition, Derek also served on a number of work-groups and policy councils during his 5 years at Valencia College.

In Derek’s immediate past role, he served the University of Florida College of Pharmacy’s Orlando Campus from 2013 to 2018, where he provided support on campus operations, student programing, clinical rotations, and regional recruitment for a nationally ranked top-10 Pharm. D. program.

Currently, Derek is completing a Masters of Arts in Instructional Design and Educational Technology, and expects to complete during 2019. During his spare time, Derek enjoys traveling, cooking, time with his dog Dallas, and exploring the Charleston area and surrounding coastal towns.
