The maximum Faculty Research Grant award per applicant for the upcoming fiscal year is anticipated to be $3,000. Only in very rare circumstances will exceptions to this maximum be made by the Research Committee, but in those instances the applicants must sustain a heavy burden of proof in justifying the proposed expenditures. The applicant should note that this limit applies only to Research Grants; Faculty Development & Presentation grants have a separate annual limit.
Activities and expenditures which may be supported by Swain Family School of Science & Mathematics Research Grants include travel to conduct (but not to present the results of) research, purchase of equipment and supplies directly relevant to the proposed research, use of student assistants for research activities, and payment of fees and other costs pertinent to gathering and transmission of data or publication of research findings. Restrictions on eligible expenditures may be found in theBudget Guidelines andFAQs.
The Swain Family School of Science & Mathematics Grants Committee will consider the clarity with which the proposed activities are presented, the apparent feasibility of the proposed activities, the benefits to be derived from the research, and the cost effectiveness of the proposed methods and expenditures. The entire committee will review proposals and make recommendations to the dean, who will make the final decision on funding.
