The Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics Student award
(Undergraduate, Graduate)
Description: This award recognizes an all-around outstanding final-year student in the Swain Family. Three total awards acknowledge students in the following categories: one South Carolina Corps of Cadets student, one Citadel Graduate College student (including evening undergraduate students), and one Veteran or Active Duty student.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be receiving a degree in a program housed within the SFSSM.
- GPA of 3.5.
Nominations should include a resume (maximum of two pages, 10 point font minimum) and a supporting letter (500 words or less) that describes why the individual should be selected as the SFSSM Outstanding student. Candidates competitive for the award will demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, service to others, and participation in high-impact practice extracurricular activities. Departments will nominate no more than one student in each of the above categories from their department.
Beyond GPA, examples of outstanding academic performance might include Gold Stars, peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations, among others. Leadership is not limited to that inside The Citadel; exemplary civic and community leadership is welcomed. High-impact practices include undergraduate research, internships, capstone projects, service learning, and study abroad, among others.

Selection process: Nominations will be made by each department head or their designee. Nominations will be reviewed by the Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics Award Selection Committee and a recommendation will be made to the Dean SFSSM by second Friday in February.
Awardees will be recognized at the annual Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics awards banquet and receive a certificate and a check for $250.
The CASM Early Career Faculty Award
Description: The purpose of this award is to recognize the contributions of an SFSSM early career faculty member that has had a substantial impact upon the students and The Citadel. For the purpose of this award, “early career” is defined as any SFSSM Assistant or Associate faculty member (tenured or tenure-track) with less than 15 years of service. The selected faculty member must have demonstrated excellence and distinction in teaching, scholarship, research and related creative activities, and professional service that exceeds the minimum performance for their rank at The Citadel. The recipient should also demonstrate a strong potential for continuing to make positive contributions to SFSSM in the future.
Nominations must be made by a current faculty member and include a support letter from the nominator and one from a current or past student. The nomination letter should discuss how the faculty meets the above criteria. All electronic nominations should be submitted to ssm@citadel.edu. The CASM Distinguished Alumni and Friends award
The criteria for induction into The Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics include:
• National or international recognition of accomplishments in education, research, clinical practice, government or military service, and/or administration/management. The recipient is recognized by peers for the strength of their leadership in a scientific discipline, discoveries, teaching and publications.
• Professional Achievement and Career and/or Military Service Distinction: The recipient attained prominence through his or her efforts in commerce, industry, technology, scientific professions, the arts, education, government, military or other worthy endeavors that form a record of accomplishment impressive to alumni, the public and the nation.
• Service to Society and Community: The recipient exhibits integrity and a demonstrated commitment to community service by bettering the lives of others.
• Service and Support to the Citadel: The recipient’s deeds and actions reflect the importance of their educational training, pride in their alma mater, and loyalty to the School of Science and Mathematics (SSM) and The Citadel as demonstrated through their interest, actions and support of SFSSM students and activities.
The inductee must either have a background in or contributed to a discipline relevant to SFSSM. We encourage nominations of exceptional alumni who are early in their career (within 15 years of graduating from The Citadel); their nominations will be evaluated separately from the more established nominees. At most, one early career inductees will be selected each year. All inductees must be available to attend the awards ceremony during Corps Week in March.
Alumni and members of the CSMC and SFSSM faculty are requested to submit nominations for the distinguished alumni and friends awards to ssm@citadel.edu. Questions should be addressed to Vanessa McFadden, Assistant to the Dean. Nomination packages should include: (1) a letter explaining why the individual is being nominated including an overview of their contributions to their profession, The Citadel, and SFSSM; and (2) a 1-2 page resume or complete Curriculum Vitae. Following an initial screening, additional materials such as a short biography may be requested for nominations selected for the final stage.

The CASM Faculty award
Description: The purpose of this award is to recognize an exceptionally successful faculty (current, past or retired) who has/had significantly impacted the students and/or The Citadel during their time at The Citadel. There are other annual college-wide faculty awards; this award is to recognize sustained achievements spanning a number of years.
- Excel or has excelled in at least one area (teaching, scholarship, service), i.e., far exceeds minimum performance expected at that rank at The Citadel
- Been a faculty at The Citadel for at least 5 years by the time of nomination.
- Has had a substantial impact on The Citadel and its students
Nominations must be made by a current faculty and include a support letter from the nominator and one from a current or past student. The Selection Committee for all of the CASM awards (except for the student ones) is a subcommittee of the Citadel Science and Mathematics Council, the Advisory Board to the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics.
