In 1996, chemistry professor Suzanne Mabrouk, Ph.D., founded The Gold Star Journal, an academic publication that highlights the best work across disciplines. In the 27 years since it was first published, work on the journal has become a status symbol for cadets who excel in the classroom.

In 1996, The Gold Star Journal (GSJ) was born from a simple desire to honor the intellectual and academic accomplishments of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and The Citadel Graduate College, offering students the opportunity to publish their best work from any class or project. The founding editors were three sophomores: Bradley Moorer, ’99, Joshua Jenkins, ’99, and Christopher McFarland, ’99.

The GSJ has partnered with the Charleston Mercury to produce this keepsake magazine, which will introduce you, the reader, to The Citadel’s GSJ through the reprinting of six of its previously published articles. This magazine honors The Citadel’s “175 Years of Principled Leadership” by featuring articles on the school’s history and profiles of five current distinguished Citadel students.
