Application for Graduation
All students must complete an application for graduation via their student tab in Lesesne Gateway.
The deadline for submitting the application for any given academic year is at the end of October. Please refer to the academic calendar for the graduation application deadline.
Degrees are not automatically awarded when requirements have been satisfied. It is the student’s responsibility to apply for degrees and certificates.
Fees
There is a $50 graduation fee for all undergraduate students and graduate students. There is a $25 graduation fee for all certificate students. For students pending graduation for the current semester, you will receive notification from the Office of the Registrar when this fee can be paid via Lesesne Gateway. If a student does not successfully complete their degree requirements within the term that they specified on their application for graduation, they will be responsible for reapplying for graduation and paying another $50 or $25 graduation fee.
Past Due Balances and Diplomas
Diplomas will not be released to graduates who have outstanding financial holds. Contact the Treasurer’s Office if you have questions about balances or financial holds on your record. Students are responsible for notifying the Office of the Registrar (registrar@citadel.edu) when a past due balance has been resolved.
Majors & Minors
Beginning Spring 2019, all undergraduate diplomas will include a student’s major.
Minors are not printed on the diploma, but are printed on the transcript.
Latin honors are show on the diploma by a gold seal that will be included with the student’s diploma (if applicable).
Students will receive one diploma per degree earned. If a student completes two (or more) majors on the same degree, all majors will be included on one diploma. Degrees earned for each major are listed in the Undergraduate Catalog.
Honors
Commencement Honors
Commencement Honors are awarded to all qualifying undergraduate students in the graduating class.
Important Note: A qualifying student’s estimated honors will be reflected in The Citadel’s commencement program. Final commencement honors will be determined after the submission of all final grades for the respective term. Final commencement honors will reflect on both the graduate’s academic transcript as well as their diploma.
- A degree summa cum laude is awarded to undergraduate students in the graduating class who have achieved a grade-point average of 3.900-4.000.
- A degree magna cum laude is awarded to undergraduate students in the graduating class who have achieved a grade-point average of 3.700-3.899.
- A degree cum laude is awarded to undergraduate students in the graduating class who have achieved a grade-point average of 3.500-3.699

With Distinction
Graduate students who have earned a cumulative grade point average of a 4.0 will be recognized with the honor of “With Distinction”. This honor will reflect in the commencement program. The honor of “With Distinction” will not reflect on the graduate’s diploma or academic transcript.
Graduate students pending summer graduation will not have the commencement honor of “With Distinction” displayed in the commencement program, as a final GPA has not yet been calculated.
Dimensions, Distribution, & Mailing
Diploma dimensions are 16″ x 20″.
Certificate dimensions are 14″ x 11″.
Diplomas are mailed to the address that the student provides on their Application for Graduation upon verification of cleared account with the Office of the Treasurer.
Students are responsible for ensuring that their mailing address is up to date with the Office of the Registrar.
Replacement Diplomas
Alumni may request a replacement diploma by submitting the Diploma Request form along with payment. If you have selected to pay by credit card, a member of our staff will call you to collect your credit card information. Credit Card information should not be included on the form since it is not PCI compliant if submitted via email. Credit card information can be included on the form if faxed to the Office of the Registrar. Please allow up to three months for delivery.
The replacement diploma fee is $50 for a diploma and $25 for a certificate. Diplomas will be reproduced on the engraver’s current paper stock using signatures of current officials of the State and the College. In other words, the replacement diploma may not be an exact duplicate of the original. However, the diploma will match your official academic record on file (name, degree, and conferral date).
Reissuance of Diploma Upon Change of Name
Upon payment of the applicable administrative fee, currently $50.00, the Citadel will reissue a diploma for a graduate whose name has legally changed. The reissued diploma will carry the date the degree was originally awarded. The reissued diploma will bear the signatures of the current officials of the State and the College.
To request a Replacement Diploma, complete and submit the Diploma Request form.
