Citadel Teaching Foundations

Citadel Teaching Foundations prepares instructors to teach well in person, in hybrid and hi-flex courses, and online. It includes three self-paced trainings in Canvas, each with step-by-step video tutorials, practical guidance, and best practices that reflect Citadel expectations.

Canvas Fundamentals and Best Practices for Assessment and Grading are required for all instructors. Best Practices in Online and Hybrid Teaching is required only if you teach an online, hybrid, or hi-flex course.

What You Will Complete

Canvas Fundamentals

Learn to navigate, customize, and manage your Canvas courses, whether you are new to Canvas or want a refresher. You will:

  • Set up your course homepage
  • Create assignments, discussions, and quizzes
  • Organize and manage course content
  • Apply accessibility and usability best practices

Best Practices for Assessment and Grading

Strengthen how you design assessments, give feedback, and grade in Canvas. You will:

  • Develop aligned assessments with clear grading criteria
  • Create and use rubrics for transparency and consistency
  • Use the Canvas Gradebook and SpeedGrader effectively
  • Communicate student progress fairly and clearly

Best Practices in Online and Hybrid Teaching

Learn strategies for designing and delivering effective online and hybrid instruction, including ways to keep students engaged. You will:

  • Complete the parity table required for hybrid and online course documentation
  • Understand the online course review process, which is based on Quality Matters standards
  • Use design tips and tools to build student-centered digital learning experiences

How It Works

Each training is self-paced in Canvas. To complete a training, score 90% or higher on its final quiz.

Once you are listed as an instructor of record in Banner, CEITL enrolls you in the trainings in Canvas.
