The Citadel provides a limited number of on-campus housing units to support faculty and staff whose residence on campus contributes to the College’s mission, student development, and operational needs. Campus housing also assists newly hired employees as they transition to the Charleston area.

Campus Housing Vision

The Citadel’s campus housing program supports the College’s mission by fostering a residential environment that strengthens leadership development, mentorship, and community engagement. Faculty and staff who reside on campus play an important role in supporting cadets and students beyond the classroom while contributing to the daily life, traditions, and operational readiness of the institution.

Campus housing also serves as a strategic resource that assists in recruiting and retaining talented faculty and staff, supports newly hired employees transitioning to the Charleston area, and helps ensure the continuity of critical campus operations. Because housing inventory is limited, assignments are made in a manner that best supports the mission, priorities, and long-term needs of The Citadel.

About Campus Housing

The Citadel maintains 77 faculty and staff housing units located throughout campus. Housing options range from approximately 1,200-square-foot two-bedroom units to four-bedroom residences exceeding 2,700 square feet. Most units are located within multi-family housing buildings, with a limited number of single-family residences.

Housing Categories

Designated Housing

Designated Housing is reserved for individuals serving in specific leadership positions, such as the President and the Commandant. Residents may remain in the assigned unit throughout their tenure in the designated position.

Permanent Housing

Permanent Housing is assigned to designated positions by Executive Staff in accordance with the Campus Housing Vision. Assignments are generally approved for five-year terms and may be renewed. Occupancy is reviewed annually to ensure continued support of the objectives of the housing program.

Transition Housing

Transition Housing is intended primarily for newly hired faculty and staff members relocating to the Charleston area. Assignments typically range from five months to two years, depending on availability and individual circumstances.

Applying for Housing

Faculty and staff interested in on-campus housing should complete the Housing Interest Application. Housing assignments are made in accordance with The Citadel’s Housing Policy and Campus Housing Vision.

Priority is generally given to newly hired faculty and staff members, followed by existing employees based on institutional needs and housing availability.

Housing Maintenance and Renovations

The Office of Facilities & Engineering is responsible for maintaining and renovating campus housing units. Renovations are completed prior to occupancy and vary in scope depending on the condition and needs of each unit.

With occupancy typically exceeding 95 percent, housing turnover most often occurs during the summer and winter break periods.

Housing Policies

Assignment criteria, eligibility requirements, occupancy guidelines, and housing procedures are outlined in the Housing Policy. Faculty and staff are encouraged to review the policy before submitting an application. The current Housing Policy became effective on February 16, 2024.
