Overview
The deadline for the AY2025-26 Summer FAIR Grant Program application cycle has passed. Information for the AY2026-27 application cycle will be posted here when available.
The Faculty Summer Research Grants Committee invites eligible faculty to submit proposals to the Provost-Funded Summer Faculty Artificial Intelligence Research (Summer FAIR) Grant Program (formerly the Faculty Summer Provost Research Grant Program, or SuPR). Through this competitive program, the committee provides recommendations to the Provost to fund faculty scholarship and research in artificial intelligence (AI). The program helps faculty expand their AI expertise, encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, and supports projects that generate new knowledge about AI technologies and their applications.
The Summer FAIR Grant Program also provides seed funding for faculty who plan to develop AI-related scholarly activities and pursue future external funding. It promotes innovative scholarship that advances AI in teaching and pedagogy, supports national defense priorities, and encourages the responsible development and application of AI technologies.
The program offers awards of up to $12,500 per project.
Program Guidelines
- Faculty may conduct funded projects during the summer term or extend them throughout the academic year, depending on the project’s scope. Recipients must expend all awarded funds by August 15, 2026. Applicants should clearly identify the expected milestones and success criteria for both summer-only and full academic-year projects in their proposals.
- Grants may cover expenses for research-related travel but do not support travel to present at conferences. Applicants may request a summer stipend of up to $2,000 as part of the grant application. If multiple faculty members collaborate on a project, they must share the $2,000 stipend.
- If more than one person participates in the research project, eligibility is tied to the principal investigator (PI). The PI will work with their department’s administrative support and the Office of the Provost to manage the budget.
- Applicants must submit their applications by the prescribed deadline. The committee will not consider late applications.
- Grant recipients must submit a post-grant report by the established deadline. Failure to submit the report may result in the loss of the grant and the repayment of previously disbursed funds.
Eligibility for Summer FAIR Funding
- Tenured and tenure-track faculty, as well as department heads, are eligible to apply. Deans are not eligible.
- Faculty who participated in a sabbatical during AY2025–26 or who will receive a sabbatical during AY2026–27 may not apply.
- The committee will not consider applications that focus primarily on faculty development, training, or similar activities.
