The Citadel Teaching Foundations training program ensures all instructors have the knowledge and tools needed to deliver high-quality instruction—whether in traditional, hybrid, or online formats. There are three training courses, each offered asynchronously in Canvas and designed for self-paced completion. All courses include step-by-step video tutorials, practical guidance, and best practices aligned with institutional expectations. To complete a course, you must score 90% or higher on the final quiz.
1. Canvas Fundamentals
(Required for all instructors)
This foundational course helps you confidently navigate, customize, and manage your Canvas courses. Whether you’re new to Canvas or need a refresher, this training covers:
- Setting up your course homepage
- Creating assignments, discussions, and quizzes
- Organizing and managing course content
- Applying accessibility and usability best practices
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to build a well-structured, accessible, and engaging Canvas learning environment for your students.
2. Best Practices for Assessment and Grading
(Required for all instructors)
This course is designed to help you strengthen your approach to assessment design, feedback, and grading in Canvas. Topics include:
- Developing aligned assessments and using clear grading criteria
- Creating and applying rubrics for transparency and consistency
- Using the Canvas Gradebook and SpeedGrader effectively
- Communicating student progress with fairness and clarity
Whether you’re setting up your Gradebook for the first time or refining your assessment strategies, this course supports deeper learning and student success.
3. Best Practices for Teaching Online and Hybrid Courses
(Required only if you are teaching an online, hybrid, or HyFlex course)
This course provides essential strategies for designing and delivering effective online and hybrid instruction. In addition to exploring pedagogical best practices and engagement strategies, the course includes:
- Guidance on completing the parity table required for hybrid and online course documentation
- An overview of the online course review process based on Quality Matters standards
- Tools and design tips for building student-centered digital learning experiences
This training supports instructors in creating high-quality courses that meet both student needs and institutional standards for online education.
