Welcome to The Citadel Mathematics Placement Information Website
Details about the Math Readiness Program and the Math Placement Exam (MPE) are provided below. Access to both the Readiness Program and the Placement Exam can be found in your Citadel Canvas account.
If your intended major is Biochemistry, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Construction Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Cyber Operations, Mathematics or Physics, you must take the Math Placement Exam.
Do I need to take the Math Placement Exam?
You are required to take the Math Placement Exam if your major requires you to enroll in Calculus I (MATH 131). If you are not ready for Calculus I, you will start with Precalculus (MATH 119) instead.
The following majors require Calculus I (MATH 131):
- Biochemistry
- Chemistry (B.S.)
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Science
- Construction Engineering
- Cyber Operations
- Electrical Engineering
- Mathematics
- Mechanical Engineering
- Physics
- Important: If you plan to commission into the Navy, you must complete MATH 131, regardless of your major
What is the Math Placement Exam (MPE)?
The Math Placement Exam is completed online through McGraw Hill’s ALEKS Placement, Preparation, and Learning System. It assesses your knowledge of algebra and trigonometry.
Your score on the proctored assessment will determine whether you are placed into:
- Calculus I (MATH 131), or
- Precalculus (MATH 119) to build the skills needed for Calculus.
- Please note: No calculators, notes, or outside resources are allowed during the proctored assessment. This ensures we place you in the course where you will be most successful.
How much does the Math Placement Exam cost?
The ALEKS Placement Assessment costs $25 and includes up to five (5) attempts.
How long does the Math Placement Exam take?
The exam typically takes about 90 minutes, but you are allowed up to three (3) hours to complete it.
When will I know my score?
You will see your score immediately after finishing the exam.
- If you are satisfied with your score, there is no need to retake the test.
- If you would like to improve your score, you may retake the exam when you are ready.
How is placement determined?
Your highest score will determine your placement:
- 76–100: Placement into Calculus I (MATH 131)
- 75 or below: Placement into Precalculus (MATH 119)
