Thursday, May 2

2 p.m. BACCALAUREATE SERVICE AND CARILLON CONCERT

Place: Summerall Chapel

Speaker: Major General Thomas Mullikin, Commanding General, South Carolina State Guard, Retired

Approx. Running Time: 1 ½ hours

Suggested Dress: Business Casual

Restrictions: No flash photography

3:30 p.m.  NURSING GRADUATION CANDIDATES - PINNING CEREMONY (Select group only)

New nurses are presented with nursing pins.

Place: Buyer Auditorium, Mark Clark Hall

Speaker: Dr. Connie Book, President, Elon University and former provost at The Citadel

Suggested Dress:  Business Casual

Special Information: This event is for Nursing Program Graduates and their family members.

6 p.m. HONORS PROGRAM DINNER (Select group only)

Certificates will be presented to Honors Program graduating seniors.

Place: Regimental Commanders Riverview Room

Approx. Running Time: 2 hours

Special Information: This is a special dinner for Honors Program participants and their parents.

 

Friday, May 3

MILITARY COMMISSIONING CEREMONIES

Time & Place: Army - 8:00AM, McAlister Field House | Air Force - 9:45AM, Summerall Chapel | Navy/Marine - 12:00PM, Summerall Chapel

Suggested Arrival: All guests are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start.

Graduates and Participants: Commissionees, in service uniform, will be instructed where to assemble in advance.

Special Information: These ceremonies are for graduates being commissioned into the Armed Forces and their families. A "swearing-in" ceremony for all branches will take place Saturday morning during commencement exercises.

Restrictions: No flash photography permitted in the chapel.

1:45 p.m. ALUMNI PARENTS & ALUMNI GRANDPARENTS BRIEFING (Select group only)

This briefing is for alumni parents and grandparents presenting diplomas at the cadet commencement who received an invitation to participate from the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs.

Legacy Diploma Presentation Request: Diploma presentation by a Citadel alumni parent must be requested by the graduation candidate and approved prior to the ceremony. The deadline to make a request is March 1st. If you have questions, please email: commencement@citadel.edu

Approx. Running Time: 30 minutes

Suggested Dress: Business attire (be prepared for photos immediately following the briefing)

Suggested Arrival: Alumni parents/grandparents are asked to arrive no later than 1:35 p.m. in McAlister Field House.

Special Information: Alumni parents/grandparents who will be presenting diplomas to their sons or daughters will meet with the associate provost for academic operations for special instructions. Information will include a walk-through of the pre­sentations on the stage and details on where to meet, park and when to arrive Saturday morning.

2:15 p.m. LEGACY PHOTOS (Select group only)

Immediately after the briefing for alumni parents/grandparents and their cadet graduates our photographer will take individual diploma presentation photos for the Alumni News magazine and family photos.

Place: McAlister Field House

Approx. Running Time: 45 minutes

Suggested Dress: Coat and tie for gentlemen; full dress with waistplate or sash (no hats) for cadets.

Special Information: Immediately following the briefing for alumni parents/grandparents, individual diploma presentation photos for the Alumni News magazine will begin. Family photos may also be taken at this time. Families are asked to wait in the fieldhouse lobby until the conclusion of the parents/grandparents briefing.

3:15 p.m. NEW SUMMERALL GUARDS PERFORMANCE IN HONOR OF THE GRADUATING CLASS

Place: Summerall Field

Inclement Weather: Cancelled

Approx. Running Time: 20 minutes

Suggested Dress: Casual

Suggested Arrival: All guests are asked to be seated in the bleachers 15 minutes prior to the performance.

Special Information: The new Summerall Guards will perform the traditional "Citadel Series" in honor of the graduating class.

3:45 p.m. GRADUATION PARADE (LONG GRAY LINE)

Place: Summerall Field

Inclement Weather: Cancelled

Approx. Running Time: 45 minutes

Parking: Parking will be available along the fence line of Hampton Park, with the rest of the park available on a first come first serve basis.

Suggested Dress: Casual

Suggested Arrival: All guests are asked to be seated in the bleachers 15 minutes prior to the parade.

Special Information: Members of the graduating class will march in their final parade as cadets. As the class crosses Summerall Field to "take the review," the new leadership will take command of the Corps of Cadets.

4:30 p.m. GARDEN PARTY HOSTED BY GEN. AND MRS. GLENN WALTERS FOR THE GRADUATING CLASS AND THEIR GUESTS

Place: President's House

Inclement Weather: Cancelled

Approx. Running Time: 1 ½ hours

Suggested Dress: Business Casual

Suggested Arrival: GEN. and Mrs. Walters will welcome the graduating class and their guests immediately after parade until 6:00 p.m.

Special Information: This is an opportunity for the graduating class and their guests to meet the President and First Lady. Light refreshments will be served.

 

Saturday May 4

9 a.m. CORPS OF CADETS COMMENCEMENT EXERCISEScommencement-2017-2

Place: McAlister Field House

Speaker: General Kenneth Franklin McKenzie, Commander, United States Central Command

Inclement Weather: As scheduled

Approx. Running Time: Approx. 3 hours

Suggested Dress: Coat and tie

Suggested Arrival: All guests are asked to be seated by 8:30 a.m. Doors will close at 8:50 a.m. for the processional. Doors will not reopen until after the national anthem and invocation.

Graduates and Participants: Graduates will gather in Deas Hall no later than 7 a.m. for lineup. Alumni parents/grandparents presenting diplomas to their sons or daughters will be lined up in the rear hallway of McAlister Field House.

Restrictions regarding photography: Unauthorized non-Citadel professional photography is prohibited. The Citadel's photographer will take photos of each graduate during the diploma presentation. Families are asked not to come forward to take family snapshots or video. Only authorized media photographers will be permitted on the field house floor during commencement. The vendor, GradImages will contact graduates and their families following commencement with more information on ordering photographs. What to Expect: The ceremony will begin promptly at 9 a.m. with the processional of the graduating class, the faculty and the platform party. After the invocation, national anthem and introductions of the special guests, GEN. Walters will deliver remarks, honors, awards and honorary degrees will be presented. The guest speaker will then deliver the commencement address. GEN. Walters will administer the oath to those entering the Armed Forces. The presentation of candidates and conferring of degrees will precede the actual presentation of diplomas. At the conclusion, the president of The Citadel Alumni Association will have graduates rise and turn their rings so that the numerals face out. The ceremony will conclude with the singing of the alma mater, closing remarks by GEN. Walters and the "tossing of hats."

Please note that cadets and students will be given a tube representing their diploma when they walk across the stage. Following commencement, cadets and students will be asked to report to Deas Hall to pick up their diploma. Graduates who received Life Membership in The Citadel Alumni Association will also pick up their membership plaques and associated items in Deas Hall.

Guest overflow live-stream broadcast location on campus: For family members and friends who do not have a ticket to attend the ceremony inside McAlister, The Citadel will be broadcasting a live stream of the entire commencement event in Grimsley Hall Auditorium and Grimsley Hall, Rm 112.  Grimsley Hall can be located on the college's virtual map, at position number 15. Tickets are not required to watch the ceremony in the Grimsley Hall locations, which are located on the first floor of that building. Please note that space availability is limited.

 

Tickets (required for all guests in McAlister Field House)

General admission tickets are required for the Corps of Cadets commencement on Saturday morning.

  • Each graduating cadet will receive eight tickets, distributed directly to the cadet through the Office of Cadet Activities between the dates of April 15 - 26. Seating the day of the event is in the bleachers and is first come, first serve.
  • The doors to McAlister Field House will open at 7:30 a.m.
  • Candidates who need additional tickets must contact Shelton Milner in Cadet Activities in person. The maximum number of extra tickets that may be requested is four.  Extra tickets will be distributed in a lottery system.  Only the graduation candidate may request additional tickets.
  • December graduates and fifth-year candidates living off-campus must contact Shelton Milner for tickets at 843-953-4875 or milners@citadel.edu NLT 26 April.  If not contacted by that date, your tickets will be given to a graduating senior in need.

Accessible Seating

Guests unable to use steps may use the accessible seating behind the graduates. Guests that are able to use steps should use the appropriately marked bleacher seating. One family member may sit with the person or persons needing accessible seating in either location. Accessible seating may not be reserved and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Commencement Ceremony Security Restrictions

No boxes, alcohol, weapons, firecrackers, noise makers, camera bags, video cameras, umbrellas, beverage containers of any sort, backpacks, large handbags, coolers, thermoses or similar items will be allowed in the field house. Food and drink are prohibited.

Leaving McAlister Field House during the ceremony is highly discouraged. Those who leave will be given a wrist band and will be required to go back through security screening prior to re-entry.

Ordering Announcements

Announcements should be ordered directly through Balfour Graduation Announcements online. The last day to order announcements is April 1, 2019. Please note that an announcement cannot be used for admission into the SCCC ceremony.

Ordering Photographs

A professional photographer has been contracted by the college to take pictures of each individual during Friday's military commissioning ceremonies and each individual receiving a diploma at commencement. Families are asked not to attempt to come down to the field house floor during graduation. Unauthorized professional photography is prohibited.

The company GradImages will contact graduates and their families following the ceremonies. Questions may be emailed after May 6 to service@gradimages.com. Following commencement, photographs can be ordered online at www.gradimages.com or by calling 1-800-261-2576.
