Southern Association of Colleges and Schools – SACS

The Citadel is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, masters, and specialist in education degrees. Contact the Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097 or call 404-679-4500 for questions about the accreditation of The Citadel.

Normal inquiries about the institution, such as admission requirements, financial aid, educational programs, etc., should be addressed directly to The Citadel and not to the Commission’s office. The Commission should be contacted only if there is evidence that appears to support a significant non-compliance with a requirement or standard.

The Principles of Accreditation details the accrediting standards with which institutions must comply. The SACS Handbook for Institutions Seeking Reaffirmation provides information on the accrediting process.

Substantive Change Policy

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The U.S. Department of Education recognizes SACSCOC as an agency whose accreditation enables its members to seek eligibility to participate in Title IV programs. As a standard of accreditation, The Citadel must notify the COC of substantive changes before they occur. Substantive change is a significant modification or expansion in the nature and scope of an accredited institution. The SACSCOC policy on substantive change incorporates federal requirements into its substantive change policy and procedures. This college policy applies to all types of substantive changes.
