INFORMATION ON YOUR FORM 1098-T
BOX 1: PAYMENTS RECEIVED FOR QUALIFIED TUITION AND RELATED EXPENSES
“Box 1. Shows the total payments received by an eligible educational institution [during the calendar year] from any source for qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE) less any reimbursements or refunds made [during the calendar year] that related to those payments received [during the calendar year.]”
Qualified expenses for education tax credits are defined by the IRS as “amounts paid for tuition, fees, and other related expense[s]…that are required for enrollment or attendance at an eligible academic institution.”
For purposes of the IRS Form 1098-T provided by The Citadel, the following categories of charges are included or not included in qualified tuition and related expenses:

BOX 4: ADJUSTMENTS MADE FOR A PRIOR YEAR
“Box 4. Shows any adjustment made by an eligible educational institution for a prior year for qualified tuition and related expenses that were reported on a prior year Form 1098-T. This amount may reduce any allowable education credit that you claimed for the prior year (may result in an increase in tax liability for the year of the refund). See “recapture” in the index to Pub. 970 to report a reduction in your education credit or tuition and fees deduction.”
The amount reported in Box 4 reports adjustments made to qualified tuition and related expenses reported on a prior year Form 1098-T in Box 1. The amount reported in Box 4 represents a reduction in tuition paid during a prior calendar year. For example, if you paid Spring semester classes in December and withdrew from classes in January which resulted in a refund, Box 4 reports the decrease in paid tuition due to the withdrawal.
BOX 5: SCHOLARSHIPS OR GRANTS
“Box 5. Shows the total of all scholarships or grants administered and processed by the eligible educational institution. The amount of scholarships or grants for the calendar year (including those not reported by the institution) may reduce the amount of the education credit you claim for the year.
TIP: You may be able to increase the combined value of an education credit and certain educational assistance (including Pell Grants) if the student includes some or all of the educational assistance in income in the year it is received. For details, see Pub. 970.”
The amount reported in Box 5 represents the total of scholarships or grants administered by The Citadel’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships during the calendar year. The amount reported in Box 5 does not include:
- Student loans, for example subsidized, unsubsidized, PLUS, and alternative loans
- Work-Study
- Scholarships, grants, reimbursements or other types of sponsorships not administered or processed by The Citadel’s Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships
BOX 6: ADJUSTMENTS TO SCHOLARSHIPS OR GRANTS FOR A PRIOR YEAR
“Box 6. Shows adjustments to scholarships or grants for a prior year. This amount may affect the amount of any allowable tuition and fees deduction or education credit that you claimed for the prior year. You may have to file an amended income tax return (Form 1040-X) for the prior year.”
The amount reported in Box 6 reports adjustments made to scholarships or grants reported on a prior year Form 1098-T in Box 5. The amount reported represents a reduction in scholarships or grants reported for a prior calendar year.
BOX 7: CHECKED IF THE AMOUNT IN BOX 1 INCLUDES AMOUNTS FOR AN ACADEMIC PERIOD BEGINNING JANUARY-MARCH OF THE FOLLOWING YEAR
“Box 7. Shows whether the amount in box 1 includes amounts for an academic period beginning January-March of the following year. See Pub. 970 for how to report these amounts.”
When Box 7 is checked, this indicates that Box 1 includes amounts for an academic period beginning in the next calendar year. For example, if you registered and paid for the upcoming Spring semester during November or December, this box will be checked.
BOX 8: CHECKED IF AT LEAST HALF-TIME STUDENT
“Box 8. Shows whether you are considered to be carrying at least one-half the normal full-time workload for your course of study at the reporting institution.”
When Box 8 is checked, this indicates you are considered to be carrying at least one-half the normal full-time workload for your course of study at The Citadel for at least one academic period during the calendar year.
BOX 9: CHECKED IF GRADUATE STUDENT
“Box 9. Shows whether you are considered to be enrolled in a program leading to a graduate degree, graduate-level certificate, or other recognized graduate-level educational credential.”
When Box 9 is checked, this indicates that you are considered to be enrolled in a program leading to a graduate degree, graduate-level certificate, or other recognized graduate-level educational credential.
BOX 10: INSURANCE CONTRACT REIMBURSEMENT/REFUND
“Box 10. Shows the total amount of reimbursements or refunds of qualified tuition and related expenses made by an insurer. The amount of reimbursements or refunds for the calendar year may reduce the amount of any education credit you can claim for the year (may result in an increase in tax liability for the year of the refund).”
The Citadel does not use Box 10.
