What is a Form 1098-T?
Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement, is an informational return that colleges and universities must provide to their students each year. Form 1098-T reports the payments received by the school for a student’s qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE), as well as the students’ total scholarships and grants. The information from Form 1098-T is used by the student when filing their tax returns to determine their eligibility for various tax credits and deductions, including but not limited to the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) and Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC).
When will my Form 1098-T be available?
For current students, Form 1098-T will be available online through the my.citadel.edu portal no later than the IRS deadline of January 31st. Please see Form 1098-T Access for detailed instructions. For former students and students that have not consented to electronic only delivery, Forms 1098-T will be physically mailed to the student’s home address with a postmark date no later than the IRS deadline of January 31st. The information reported on Form 1098-T will also be sent to the IRS.
How do I obtain a copy of my Form 1098-T?
Please see Form 1098-T Access for detailed instructions.
How do I update my address for Form 1098-T mailing purposes?
Students can submit an address update request using the “Request to Update Personal Record” form available on the Registrar’s website. Students should update their address no later than December 31st. Address updates submitted after December 31st may not be processed in time for 1098-T mailing.
Why don’t the numbers on my Form 1098-T equal the amounts I paid to The Citadel during the year?
There are potentially many reasons for this discrepancy. First, the amount in Box 1 only represents the amounts paid for qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE) and does not include payments made for room and board, insurance, parking, quartermaster fees, and some other fees and fines, which, though important, are not considered mandatory education expenses for tax purposes. See Form 1098-T Information for a detailed breakdown of what charges are and are not included in Box 1. Secondly, Form 1098-T reports amounts that the student paid in a certain year, and the pay date does not necessarily correspond to the dates that the classes were attended. For example, tuition for the Spring semester is typically billed in the prior year, so a student may have paid tuition for the Spring semester in December even though classes don’t start until January. The best and most accurate source of information about the amounts that you paid for qualified tuition and related expenses will be your Student Account activity detail.
Why didn’t I receive a Form 1098-T?
The Citadel is not required to issue Form 1098-T to individuals in the following categories even if the individual receives scholarships and grants:
- International students with a tax status of nonresident alien
- International students that do not have a US Social Security Number
- Individuals who qualified tuition and related expenses are waived and whose calculations net to zero
- Individuals who are not enrolled or who are enrolled in noncredit courses
- Individuals whose qualified tuition and related expenses are covered by a formal billing arrangement
If you are not in any of the categories listed above and still did not receive a Form 1098-T, please contact Student Business Services.
I graduated in May of the current year. Will I receive a Form 1098-T for the current year?
Some May graduates will not be issued a Form 1098-T for the current year because there is a possibility that payments for QTRE were made on or before December 31 of the previous year. The current spring semester tuition charges are generally billed and posted in December of the previous year end and, therefore, would have been included on the previous year’s Form 1098-T, in Box 1. If a student paid for the current spring semester and any other outstanding QTRE charges in the previous year, then the student would not receive a Form 1098-T for the current year.
What educational expenses are considered as qualified tuition and related expenses?
Please see Form 1098-T Information for a detailed breakdown of what charges are considered qualified tuition and related expenses.
I’m a parent or family member. How can I obtain a copy of my student’s form?

Due to the Federal Education Right to Privacy Act (FERPA), The Citadel cannot provide copies of a student’s Form 1098-T to anyone but the student themselves.
