Professor Emeritus

Dr. Nida is Professor Emeritus of Psychology and a former head of the department (2002-2009 and 2012-2018).  He has also served as Associate Provost and Dean of The Citadel Graduate College (2009-2012).  Dr. Nida is a social psychologist whose specialties are in the areas of social influence and group processes.  For the last two decades, his research focus has been ostracism and social exclusion, and he is the co-editor (with his longtime collaborator at Purdue University, Kip Williams) of the 2017 Psychology Press book, Ostracism, Exclusion, and Rejection. 

He also maintains an active interest in the social psychological aspects of sport psychology.  Dr. Nida taught our graduate and undergraduate courses in social psychology, and he frequently taught our undergraduate introductory psychology class as well.  Outside of his professional life, Dr. Nida is an avid sports fan, a runner who has completed 15 marathons, and a very mediocre guitar player.

During his final year at The Citadel, Dr. Nida was asked to deliver the department’s annual invited talk, the Leverett Lecture, and his presentation took the form of a “last lecture.” Dr. Nida used this opportunity to reflect on his professional journey, starting with some personal history that eventually transitioned into reflections on his research on ostracism and social exclusion.
