Dr. Emily Rooney
Assistant Professor
Dr. Emily Rooney is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at The Citadel. She earned a B.S. in Psychology from the College of Charleston, an M.A. in Psychology from The Citadel Graduate College, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The University of Toledo. She completed her internship and post-doctoral fellowship at The Ohio State University with the Suicide and Trauma Reduction Initiative (STRIVE) program.
Her research and clinical interests include transdiagnostic risk and protective factors for trauma-related psychopathology, including PTSD, nonsuicidal self-injury, and suicide. She is particularly interested in mechanisms that inform prevention, risk assessment, and evidence-based treatment for these outcomes. To address these questions, Dr. Rooney employs advanced statistical methods (e.g., machine learning, latent class analysis, and growth curve modeling) to understand complex patterns in psychopathology and behavior.
At The Citadel, Dr. Rooney teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Psychology. She especially enjoys mentoring the next generation of mental health professionals and finds the greatest reward in watching students gain confidence, build skills, and discover their professional passions.
