Internet & Wireless Information

Citadel Wireless Service

Wireless Service allows members of The Citadel Community (students, faculty and staff) with a laptop and an appropriate wireless network card to access the campus network and the Internet from areas around campus where wireless has been installed and activated.

To offer the potential benefits of this service to The Citadel community, ITS Network Operations and Security (NOS) is in the process of deploying a campus-wide wireless network.

To utilize this service, your Laptop or PDA device must be configured with a wireless card or have built-in wireless capability that supports the IEEE 802.11b or 802.11g wireless standards. Your device must also be able to open web pages for authentication using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption.

Wired vs Wireless:

Wireless networks should not be considered a replacement for a wired network. They are not as secure or efficient as the existing wired network, and are designed to be used for general purpose access in areas of transient use, such as common areas, meeting rooms and labs. Wireless is expanding but is presently limited to a few areas of campus. Campus Wireless Locations

Wireless Network Issues and Configuration:

Wireless LANs have become popular with mobile users, but it is this mobility that creates a security problem. Wireless LAN signals do not stop at the exterior walls of buildings. An improperly configured Wireless Access Point(WAP)can permit unauthorized entry into The Citadel network compromising the college and the computer user.

Only wireless access points provided and installed by ITS, or authorized and approved by ITS, are permitted on The Citadel network. Personal access points (also known as “rogue” access points) are not permitted; where such devices are found connected to the network, network access to that location will be disabled until the access point is removed. Client computers with wireless network interface cards (NICs) are not permitted to be configured to act as access points.

Recommended Wireless cards:

• Linksys - Wireless-G, 802.11G and 802.11B compatible.

• D-Link - AirPlus G, 802.11G and 802.11B compatible.

• Other manufacturers' 802.11B or G type cards should work.
