Bio:
Jon Culbert is the Laboratory Manager and an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Physics. A 2009 graduate of The Citadel, he returned to the department following a 22-year career in the United States Navy.
Culbert retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander after serving in both the Submarine Warfare and Information Warfare communities. His assignments included service aboard the submarines USS Bremerton, USS Florida, and USS Georgia; teaching in the Navy’s Nuclear Power Training Pipeline; and serving as an Instructor and Nuclear Power Officer with Auburn University’s Naval ROTC unit. He also served as an operational test director for the MK 54 Lightweight Torpedo acquisition program and later held information-technology leadership positions at the United States Naval Academy.
Culbert earned a B.S. in Physics from The Citadel and a B.S.A.S.T. in Nuclear Engineering Technology from Thomas Edison State University in 2009. He earned an M.S. in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, in 2020. His master’s thesis, Toward Understanding the Longitudinal Stability of an IP Geolocation Database, examined how IP geolocation records change over time and the implications of those changes for network research and analysis.
At The Citadel, Culbert manages the department’s instructional laboratories, equipment, and technical resources while supporting laboratory instruction and departmental initiatives. His professional and academic interests include experimental physics education, nuclear science and technology, computer networks, cybersecurity, information systems, and the practical application of technology in laboratory environments.
