About the PSL

The ability to speak effectively is a learned skill that comes through practice and the mastery of proven techniques. It is the mission of the Public Speaking Lab to help cadets, CGC students, faculty and staff develop their public speaking and presentation skills in a way that fits their natural style.

The Public Speaking Lab provides a number of services to help people with public speaking. Someone from the lab can offer a short class on effective speeches and PowerPoint presentations. Cadets, CGC students and others may come to the lab to practice their speeches, have them filmed and receive suggestions for improvement.

Another outreach of the Public Speaking Lab is El Cid Toastdawgs, our campus chapter of Toastmasters International. Meetings are open to all cadets and CGC students who wish to improve their speaking abilities.

In Spring 2009, the lab unveiled new equipment to enable faculty and others to easily record lectures and integrate a variety of materials into their presentations.

Located in Bond Hall 365, the Public Speaking Lab was established through a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dale Smith of Springfield, Illinois. Mr. Smith, a member of the Class of 1947 who had a distinguished business career, realized that the ability to speak effectively is a skill that enhances all other talents a person might have.

The Public Speaking Lab is open weekday afternoons from 1-5 p.m. and other times by appointment. Appointments can be made by calling 953-5103 or sending an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
