Speech Construction
- Every speech starts between the ears. Before you can even think about performing, you need to first focus on content. That’s where we come in by helping you brainstorm ideas, engagement, and concise communication that resonates long after the speech has concluded.
Mastering the Best Practices
- There are 5 concepts that will turn any ordinary speech into something memorable. Our staff is trained to quickly assess what your speech needs most, reviews that concept with relevant examples, and provides the guidance for you to apply it to your speech. Once that best practice has been implemented, we help you build through the next one until you are ready to start practicing.
Speech Anxiety
- Being nervous before a speech affects everyone. It’s how you look at it and what you do about it that separates you from everyone. We have the insight and the tools to help you think and act differently to help turn that anxiety into focused energy.
Recording Your Practice Session
- Practicing your speech is essential for your upcoming performance; this cannot be overstated. We end every session with a quick practice round regardless of how close you are to finishing your speech. There is also an option to record which you can then use for feedback. If you are uncomfortable with a recording, we suggest practicing in front of the mirror before your speech. Seeing and hearing yourself is a good way to acclimate to prepare for a live audience.
In-class Lectures & Activities
- Our student-led staff regularly presents public speaking best practices to a variety of classes and disciplines. From the sciences to the humanities, we make sure to tailor a presentation that fits specifically with your course or assignment.
Rank Boards
- The Citadel is a unique environment where cadets lead one another by obtaining rank in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets (SCCC). A major part of that process is completing a Rank Board Interview with your Commanding Officers and Senior Staff. We are prepared to help you deliver your message effectively and confidently.
Special Occasions
- The Citadel has many awards, ceremonies, and events that honor our prestigious faculty and staff as well as our accomplished cadets. The Public Speaking Lab helps many of them perfect their message and delivery behind the scenes.
Community Workshops and Outreach
- We hold Public Speaking Best Practices Workshops for our larger campus community. Director Fourney and peer tutors will visit local partners to teach students and young professionals on how to utilize public speaking more effectively in their lives. If you are interested in a workshop, please contact Sean Fourney at sfourney@citadel.edu
