Preparing Educators to Serve Every Learner
The exercise deepened their empathy and sharpened their understanding of how to create supportive, accessible learning environments for all students.
The Zucker Family School of Education is committed to preparing educators who serve every child with compassion, skill and purpose. On Oct. 16, future teachers in Christopher Dague’s class participated in a learning experience led by Jerry Francis, statewide coordinator for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services at South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation.
Francis emphasized the role of leadership, education and the importance of equipping teachers to empower all learners. During the session, students took part in simulations that mimicked the challenges faced by individuals with vision or hearing loss. Using specialized goggles and earplugs, they experienced firsthand the sensory barriers that some students encounter each day.
