Requirements for Intelligence and Security Major (ISS)

The Intelligence and Security (ISS) major at The Citadel seeks to develop each student’s capabilities for critical thinking and systematic analysis and is designed to increase the student’s knowledge of effective leadership for national security. Requirements for Intelligence and Security (ISS) majors include the following courses taken at The Citadel or a South Carolina Technical College.

General Education Courses Taken at The Citadel or a South Carolina Technical College

Below are the general education requirements for an ISS major. Students must have 59 credit hours. These courses can be taken at The Citadel or another South Carolina Technical College (or equivalent).

59 credit hours

  • Writing/English Composition (six credits)
  • Fine Arts/Humanities/Ethics/Foreign Language/other courses with significant cross-cultural content (six credits)
  • History (six credits)
  • Mathematics (six credits)
  • Physical Science (eight credits) (Courses must have lab, not necessarily sequential)
  • Social Science (six credits)
  • Lower Division Electives (21 credits)

ISS Courses Taken at The Citadel

Below are the course requirements for Intelligence and Security Studies majors at The Citadel. Students must have 61 credit hours. These ISS courses must be taken at The Citadel.

  • EUGS-101-Introduction to The Citadel Experience (one credit) (Must be taken in first semester at The Citadel)

Required Intelligence and Security Studies Core (18 credits):

  • INTL 201 Introduction to Intelligence Studies (three credits)
  • INTL 210 Homeland Security (three credits)
  • INTL 301 Advanced Analytics 1 (three credits)
  • INTL 302 Advanced Analytics 2 (three credits)

  • CSCI 227 Introduction to Cybersecurity (three credits)

The ISS major at The Citadel provides a broad and interdisciplinary approach to intelligence studies. As students choose from a wide variety of electives, they are encouraged to work with their advisor to create a unique program that best meets their individual needs. To complete the ISS major, requirements include students taking eight (8) courses from the following General Intelligence Electives list (24 credits):

Students also are required to take six upper level (300+) elective courses outside of those on the General Intelligence Elective list (18 credits).
