Advantages of The Citadel Honors Program
For students who qualify, there are many advantages of The Citadel Honors Program. Some advantages include pre-professional counseling, small class sizes, a special curriculum, and your fellow honors students.

Pre-Professional Program
The Honors College will help you develop a vision of how you can best serve your profession and our society. One of your freshman essays will address these concerns. Students will enroll in a series of 6 courses (1 per semester) that continue where that first essay left off. The Honors Program takes this pre-professional program seriously. Three academic credits are awarded for research and writing done as a part of it.
Personal and Professional Development
One of our favorite advantages of The Citadel Honors Program is our Personal and Professional Development course. Students set up tutorial meetings with the program director throughout their time at The Citadel. These meeting are to recognize the student’s goal and create a plan to prepare the student for success upon graduation. Each student engages in one-on-one meetings with our program director and us throughout the student’s career. During these meetings, a plan is derived to achieve the student’s postgraduate goals. The meetings encourage students to reach their full potential and show them how to be the best candidate for their postgraduate endeavors.

Discussion-Style Teaching
Professors teach through discussion in your Honors courses. With the guidance from your professor, you and your classmates will engage in deep discussion throughout class time. When you take an active part in class, you will find it more interesting, and you will learn more, too.
Faculty Connections
You will get to know your Honors professors and they will get to know you! We encourage you to meet individually with your professors to develop the kind of personal student-teacher relationship which is more difficult to achieve in the normal curriculum with larger class sizes. Such one-on-one experiences will be an invaluable advantage to you in many ways, both personal and academic.
Honors Faculty
Handpicked from The Citadel’s best teachers, your Honors Professors are noteworthy for their outstanding scholarly achievement, their openness and flexibility, their demonstrated teaching skills, and their appreciation of students.

Student Advisory Committee
You will have the opportunity to participate actively in the administration of the Honors Program through this student committee. The Committee will advise the Honors Director on matters such as faculty selection, course development, and social activities.

Special Honors Program Diploma Seal and Transcript
A paragraph will be placed at the end of your official college transcript indicating that you have completed The Citadel’s Honors Program and describing the requirements and philosophy of the program. Potential employers and graduate/professional school admissions deans will know that you are one of the very best students at our college. Also, attached to your Citadel diploma is a distinctive seal recognizing the significance of your accomplishment.
Emphasis on Leadership
The Citadel Honors Program has a strong tradition of producing leaders for the Corps of Cadets. Throughout the chain of command, our students are in positions of responsibility in numbers disproportionate to the small size of our program. Perhaps the future Regimental Commander will be one of your classmates when you enter the Honors Program as a freshman. Or maybe the Regimental Commander will be you! We will work with you to develop a style of leadership which works both here at The Citadel and beyond our gates as well.
