Objectives:
Provide students with a foundation of knowledge for the coaching, design, and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for athletic populations. This minor is designed to complement students’ preparation for strength and conditioning certification. Students are granted the opportunity to explore related topics in health and human performance relevant to strength and conditioning professions.
Competencies, Knowledge, or Skills to be Achieved:
- Students will develop knowledge and skills related to the instruction and evaluation of performance of strength and conditioning exercises including physiological and biomechanical demands.
- Students will evaluate biomechanical and physiological demands of athletic physical activities to be applied to the development of long-term strength and conditioning programs.
Structure of the Minor in Health Education Program:
Students must complete the following required courses and 2 courses from the approved electives (minimum of 15 total credit-hours).
Required Courses: (9 credit hours):
- EXSC 315 – Strength and Conditioning I
- EXSC 412 – Strength and Conditioning II
- EXSC 406 – Directed Field Experience (Note: must be taken with EXSC 421: Senior Seminar in HESS & PE) OR
- PHED 335 – Adv. Perf. & Athl. Dev.: Team Sports OR
- PHED 350 – Adv. Perf. & Athl. Dev.: Individual and Dual Sports
Note: Students wishing to enroll in the directed field experience for credit towards minor must have received a grade no less than a “B” in both EXSC 315 and EXSC 412 and approval of the program coordinator.
