Students can participate in faculty-led study abroad programs over the summer and on spring or winter break periods. On these programs, students will travel abroad with a Citadel faculty member and will earn Citadel credit towards their degree.

Summer programs provide students with 3-6 credit hours of Citadel course credit. If space allows, non-Citadel students are eligible to apply for Citadel faculty-led summer programs.

Summer in Estonia (PSCI/INTL)
Citadel students can enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience and adventure in Estonia this summer. Given its strategic location on the northeast frontier of the European Union and NATO along the Russian border, its history as a former Soviet Republic, and its advanced security programs, Estonia is among the most exciting countries of Europe for the study of international relations, military affairs, and cyber security.
You’ll complete 2 courses (6 total hours) of undergraduate credit (or graduate level for MA students) that can be prefixed as PSCI and/or INTL depending on your academic major and transcript needs. The program is hosted at Tallinn Technical University and includes tuition, housing, meals, in-country transportation, insurance, and excursions including a visit to the Russian border, a briefing at the NATO Center for Excellence in Cybersecurity, a rifle range to test fire WWII Soviet and modern Russian weapons, and a tour of a former KGB listening and intelligence gathering post (airfare is not included).

The Health Care Study Abroad Program to Kenya (Nursing and Leadership)
Designed primarily for Pre-Health students, although open to all, this service-based program involves being a part of The Citadel Medical Camp, the largest free general medicine provider in Kenya. As part of The Citadel Medical Camp, students will spend 3 weeks in Nairobi (the capital of Kenya), serving impoverished populations in the major slum areas. Students will work alongside Kenyan and American clinicians in partnership with the non-profit organization United Cultural Empowerment and Social Community Organization (UCESCO).
Students will acquire over 150 clinical service hours through various medical rotations and 6 credit hours (EXSC 406, EXSC 421, HLED 411) depending on your transcript needs. The program includes tuition, housing, meals, insurance, and excursions including a trip to Mombasa and a safari to Masai Mara (airfare not included).

Valencia, Spain Study Abroad (Spanish)
Valencia is one of the largest cities in Spain and lies on the Mediterranean coastline. It is a modern metropolitan city that boasts cultural and medieval historical treasures. This is your opportunity to develop and improve oral and written Spanish language skills and experience cultural immersion while visiting cathedrals and museums.
At Instituto Cervantes, you’ll take classes Monday – Friday and complete 2 courses (6 total hours) of undergraduate credit towards your elective and/or language requirements (SPAN 101/102/201/202/302/305/450). The program includes tuition, housing, meals, in-country transportation, insurance, and a city tour (airfare is not included).

Cultural and Economic Immersion in Argentina (Marketing)
This program takes you to the heart of Argentina’s vibrant economy, exploring the cultural and business landscapes of 2 iconic cities: Buenos Aires and Mendoza to see how businesses market themselves on a global scale. Buenos Aires highlights include a historical city tour, a traditional Estancia experience, and a visit to the Evita Museum. Mendoza highlights include a winery business tour, presentations at Universidad de Congreso, and exploring cattle ranching and olive oil business initiatives. In addition, there is an optional 2-day excursion to Patagonia depending on student interest.

Ireland: Revolution of 1916 to the Troubles (History)
Study the history of Ireland from the Revolution of 1916 to the Troubles by traveling to Dublin, Belfast, and Derry. You will study and visit key sites of the 1916 Easter Rising, the War of Independence and the Civil War, the Troubles of 1968-1998, and the efforts to create peace after the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.
Earn 3 credit hours and fulfill a history requirement in either Conflict or Citizenship strands, or History credit (HIST 339). You will travel to Ireland after one week of Zoom classes. The program includes tuition, housing, breakfasts, some cultural activities, local tour guides, in-country transportation, and insurance (airfare is not included).

Summer in South Korea
Korea University International Summer Campus in Seoul is an academic program specially designed for international students who wish to explore their summer through both academic and cultural learning. Various courses in Business, Humanities & Korean Studies, Social Sciences, Science & Engineering, and Korean Language are offered, as well as cultural activities on the weekends.
Take up to 3 courses and earn 3 academic credits per course while being taught by renowned scholars from top universities around the world. Tuition is not included and is approximately $1,200 for 1 course, $2,100 for 2 courses, and $2,780 for 3 courses. Studying Complex Environmental Issues in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (Earth Science and Education)
This immersive field course takes you to the heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, exploring environmental conflicts across West Yellowstone, ID; Gardiner, MT; Bozeman, MT; and Cody, WY. Students will spend time inside Yellowstone National Park with expert wildlife guides and meet with scientists, land managers, ranchers, conservation groups, and community leaders to examine issues such as wolf management, brucellosis transmission between bison and cattle, invasive species, and the effects of a changing climate. Participants will then apply lessons learned in the field to a South Carolina environmental conflict, connecting national and local perspectives on science, policy, and sustainability.
Depending on your strand, this course could address EART 201 Introduction to Earth Science (4 credits) and/or EDUC 409 Special Topics (3) for Education majors, while also providing opportunities for non-Education majors as NTSS 302 Environmental Science (3). Community Health in Honduras (Nursing)
Engage in providing healthcare services at a Honduran healthcare clinic to people of all ages. You will talk with a local educator and attorney to explore the cultural influences on healthcare. Health Science and Nursing Majors finishing their freshman through junior year can earn 3 credit hours (NURS 406). Tropical Rainforest and Reef Ecology in Belize (Biology)
This short but intensive, study-away field course in Belize provides a first-hand introduction to the biodiversity of the Neotropics within and bordering the Caribbean basin. The course format is experiential and involves daily instructor-led excursions with interpretation in two iconic habitats: tropical rainforests and coral reefs. Course activities include hiking, swimming, and snorkeling, which students will gain knowledge of tropical biodiversity through direct observation and assisted guidance while learning about the complexity and ecological underpinnings of tropical systems.
Students will earn 4 credit hours (BIOL 425) towards their Biology Major or elective credit depending on your transcript needs. The program includes tuition, housing, food, in-country transportation, insurance, and excursions (airfare is not included).

Blue Zones: Mental Health and Wellness Related to Blue Zones in Sardinia, Italy (Psychology)
Students will travel to Italy to study the psychological applications of Blue Zone principles and understand the impact of Blue Zones on mental, physical, and spiritual wellness. While engaging with locals, students will develop a plan to incorporate Blue Zones into their clinical practice. In addition to visiting Rome, archeological sites, natural springs, students will have the opportunity to participate in hiking, yoga, and meditation.
Students will earn 3 credit hours (PSYC 463 – undergrads or PSYC 555 – graduate) towards their Psychology Major or elective credit depending on your transcript needs. The program includes tuition, housing, insurance, and excursions (airfare is not included).

Madrid, Spain Study Abroad (Spanish)
Madrid is Spain’s largest city and is known as the “Golden Triangle of Art” with world class art museums. Alcala de Henares is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its rich history and cultural heritage, as well as being the birthplace of Cervantes. This is your opportunity to develop and improve oral and written Spanish language skills and experience cultural immersion while visiting cathedrals, museums, and archaeological landmarks. Students will take classes from 9 – 1:30 Monday through Friday at Alcalingua Universidad, leaving the afternoons open for excursions.

Rouen, Normandy – France (French)
France is an economic and political center of Europe with deep military ties with the Francophone world. You’ll take courses at a French school in the morning and develop fluency in French and cultural competency in a real-world context. In the afternoon discover a new culture while visiting Mont Saint-Michel, WWII Battlegrounds, and other excursions that highlight French and Flemish architecture, art museums, renowned shopping and cuisine.

7 Churches of Revelation – Study Abroad in Turkey (English)
Cadets will start in Istanbul and travel to the location of the ancient cities mentioned in Revelation, ending in Ephesus. Students will have a better understanding of the text being studied (The Book of Revelation) and be culturally immersed in the actual cultural context the letter was written to.
