Setting the Tempo that All Other Cadets Follow
Since 1909, The Citadel has embodied a tradition of duty, pride, and excellence within its cadet experience, with the Regimental Band and Pipes playing a pivotal role. While the Regimental Band and Pipes operates as one of the 21 cadet companies at The Citadel, it is comprised of two distinct parts: the Regimental Band and the Regimental Pipe Band. Each unit includes a Drum Major and a group of talented musicians who can perform independently or come together to support the Corps of Cadets, the community, and even the nation.
Honoring Tradition
The Citadel’s Regimental Band and Pipes, established in 1909, serves as a cornerstone of cadet life and campus tradition. Comprised of approximately 70 cadet musicians recruited globally, the band plays a vital role in fostering morale within the Corps and maintaining the campus’s martial spirit. Beyond ceremonial duties, the Regimental Band contributes to Friday dress parades, football games, and annual events like the Christmas candlelight service. Members also perform in community parades and hold concerts that engage alumni and the local Lowcountry community. Globally Acknowledged
Whether on the parade field, in a concert hall, or on an international stage, The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes has earned a global reputation as one of the world’s premiere military college bands, offering music with great variety, originality, and appeal.
The Band premiered original music for both units in the fall of 2022. Notably, they represented the United States at the prestigious Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland three times—1991, 2010, 2015—and performed at the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo in 2013.
This August (2024), The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes will proudly represent the United States for the fourth time as the country’s designated military band performing at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland, maintaining its unique status as the only U.S. military college band to receive this prestigious invitation.
