Eligibility and Referral for Services
Eligibility for Counseling and Psychiatry Services: Currently enrolled Citadel undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for in-person services through MUSC Health at The Citadel. We offer a variety of services, including individual counseling, diagnostic assessments, psychiatric evaluations, psychiatric medication management, and brief supportive therapy.
Referral Service: If a student’s needs extend beyond the expertise of the provider, the student will be referred to off-campus counseling resources. Expenses incurred off campus are the student’s responsibility. Citadel employees are not eligible for counseling services at the clinic. Employees are encouraged to contact Human Resources or the Employee Assistance Program (800-633-3353).
Appointments
Citadel students can book appointments with a licensed mental health provider by calling 843-953-4827, 843-985-1980 or visiting the clinic at 9 Hammond Ave (Mary Bennett Murray Infirmary). Subsequent appointments may be scheduled at the conclusion of each appointment, by calling, or by visiting the clinic.
Individual counseling sessions are 50 minutes in length.
Fees
For currently enrolled Citadel students, counseling services are included in your health fee, and you should incur no additional charges. Please review the information on the “Health Insurance” tab for more information. Expenses incurred off campus are the student’s responsibility.
Emergency Services
In the event of an emergency, during office hours, students should clearly communicate their needs to the medical office assistant or nurse to request immediate access to a mental health provider.
After hours, students can still request assistance at the clinic; a nurse will contact a counselor as needed. Alternatively, call 988 or 911, go to a hospital emergency room, or call Citadel Public Safety at 843-953-5114. Expenses incurred off-campus for treatment are the student’s responsibility.
Confidentiality
Staff maintain confidentiality in compliance with state laws and national ethical standards for licensed mental health providers. All communications between student and a provider will not be revealed to anyone outside MUSC unless the student provides written authorization to release information. The legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality which require that the provider take responsible action include:
- clear and substantial risk of imminent serious harm to the student or another person – staff are legally required to take action to protect life.
- in the case of child abuse or abuse of an intellectually or developmentally disabled adult – staff are legally required to report the abuse to Child or Adult Protective Services.
- in the event of a court order or subpoena seeking information.
