Earn your Nursing Degree at The Citadel
Cadets interested in a nursing degree will declare biology as their major during freshman year with an interest in applying for nursing. The student will be assigned a faculty advisor who will work individually with the cadet during the freshman year to position the student for acceptance into The Citadel’s nursing program. After mid-term spring semester, freshmen will be invited to request a change of major to nursing.
Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a grade of B or better in all math and science courses. They will also be asked to complete a questionnaire about their caregiving and leadership skills and write a short essay about nursing. The department faculty reviews and scores the questionnaires. Twenty-four (24) cadets will be accepted into the major.
Veteran students will receive additional consideration for admission to the program.
Prior to the acceptance into the major, students will take an Introduction to Nursing course in the spring of their freshman year. This course provides students an opportunity to determine if this career pathway is of interest. Courses in the sophomore year focus on nursing fundamentals, health assessment, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and understanding the science behind illness. In the junior year, students expand their knowledge of nursing science and begin applying care to adults in the acute care environment. Senior year is focused on the care of special populations, leadership, and complex patient and family care.
Research Opportunities
Clinical practice partners are increasingly interested in scientific evidence to support nursing practice, and students have an opportunity to address this need through evidence-based projects. Students are encouraged to participate with faculty in research and evidence-based practice projects when possible. As a developing science, the opportunities for research are numerous.
Transfers – Cadets wishing to transfer to the program should contact Dr. Kim Subasic, Nursing Department Head, at nursing@citadel.edu.
