Majoring in Nursing
Cadets who are interested in nursing will declare biology as their major during freshman year with an interest to apply for nursing. The student will be assigned a faculty advisor who will work individually with the cadet during the freshman year to position the student for acceptance into the nursing program.

After mid-term spring semester, freshmen will be invited to request a change of major to nursing. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a grade of B or better in all math and science courses. They will also be asked to complete a questionnaire about their care giving and leadership skills, and to write a short essay about nursing. The questionnaires are reviewed and scored by nursing faculty. Twenty four (24) cadets will be accepted into the nursing major.
Veteran students will receive additional consideration for admission to the nursing program.
Prior to the acceptance into the nursing major, students will take an introduction to nursing course in the spring of the freshman year. This course provides students and opportunity to take a nursing course and determine if this career pathway is of interest. Nursing courses in the sophomore year focus on nursing fundamentals, health assessment, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and understanding the science behind illness. In the junior year, students expand their knowledge of nursing science and begin applying nursing care to adults in the acute care environment. Senior year is focused on the care of special populations, leadership, and complex care of the patient and family.
