Earn Your Nursing Degree at The Citadel
The Swain Department of Nursing offers a traditional four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program for students in the Corps of Cadets and for veteran students. Through classroom instruction, high-fidelity simulation and diverse clinical experiences, students develop the knowledge, skills and clinical judgment necessary for professional nursing practice.
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at The Citadel is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), signifying that the program meets rigorous national standards for academic quality and clinical preparation in professional nursing education.

Program Overview
Students may select Nursing as their major during their freshman year. A strong foundation in the sciences prepares students for progression into upper-division nursing coursework.

The successful completion of all pre-requisite science courses (Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology 1 & 2, Microbiology, and all associated laboratory courses) must occur prior to the start of the second semester of the sophomore year.
Required Pre-Requisite Courses
The successful completion of all prerequisite science courses must occur prior to the start of the second semester of the sophomore year. These include:
- Chemistry (with lab)
- Biology (with lab)
- Anatomy & Physiology I and II (with labs)
- Microbiology (with lab)
- Psychology
To progress into nursing courses, students must:
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.7 (not rounded) at the end of the fall semester of the sophomore year
- Earn a minimum grade of C in all required science courses
For Study Abroad: Nursing students may participate in study abroad during the first semester of the sophomore year only. Students must: complete all prerequisite science courses prior to the start of the sophomore spring semester and maintain a GPA greater than 3.0 to participate in a fall semester study abroad program. Careful academic planning is required to ensure continued progression in the nursing curriculum.
