Objectives
The language major is designed to enable the student to perfect his/her fluency in the language and to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the civilization and literature that are manifestations of that language.
The major is a flexible one that has proven to be excellent preparation for students who pursue careers in most professions or continue their education in graduate, business, law and medical schools.
Requirements for French, German and Spanish
33 credit hours of course work are required in one language at the 300- and 400-levels. For all majors these required courses include 301 and 302; for Spanish, these include SPAN 305.
Note that students who are qualified may by-pass Elementary (101-102) and Intermediate (201-202) courses in their chosen language. By-passed courses will be included on The Citadel transcript as if they had been completed at The Citadel on a Pass/Fail basis.
Requirements for K-12 Teaching Certification in French, German and Spanish
33 total credit hours in French, German or Spanish to include 3 credit hours in FREN, GERM or SPAN 450 (Theory and Practice of Foreign-Language Teaching). For all MLNG majors these required courses include 301 and 302; for Spanish, these include SPAN 305.
Education Requirements EDUC 101, 202, 206, 306, 312 and 401 (18 credit hours) along with 12 credit hours in 2nd semester senior year for the “teaching internship.”
