Welcome to the Faculty Senate
The Citadel Faculty Senate was created in 2016 to improve faculty governance by combining three separate governance entities — Academic Board, Faculty Council, and Graduate Council — into a single entity. The role of the Faculty Senate is to coordinate among the academic units to address concerns common to all programs on campus. Acting directly or through its standing committees, the Faculty Senate is responsible for the college tenure and promotion process, coordination of academic programs across the various units, approval of curriculum proposals, establishment and evaluation of the core curriculum requirements common to each programs, and policy concerns that are common to all faculty members. In its role, the Faculty Senate speaks as the collective voice of the faculty.
There are two classes of senators: appointed and elected. The appointed senators represent each major academic unit. The number of elected senators varies by academic unit, based on the number of faculty members in the academic unit, and those senators are elected by the faculty. The chair of the Faculty Senate is elected at-large from the tenured faculty to represent the entire faculty. The Vice-Chair and the Recording Secretary are elected from among the senators.
Meetings are generally held once a month during the academic year and are posted to the academic calendar. Meetings are open to any interested party. The Faculty Senate oversees a number of standing committees, and much of the governance work occurs within these standing committees. For academic year 2022-2023, meeting dates are:
