The Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Leadership is designed to provide valuable professional development for those working in colleges and universities. The 100% online certificate provides coursework and professional development applicable to many functional areas in higher education, including advanced higher educational leadership concepts, strategic planning and assessment, strategic enrollment management, and organizational administration and governance.

Program Overview and Requirements

The Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Leadership consists of four core courses (12 credit hours) that cover key topics in higher education organization and governance, advanced leadership, strategic planning and assessment.

These courses are also part of the M.Ed. in Higher Education Leadership program, so students who later wish to continue their studies in the M.Ed. program will already have a strong foundation.

Admission Requirements for the Graduate Certificate Program

  • Online Application: Complete the graduate application and pay the non-refundable fee.
  • Official Transcripts: Submit transcripts from all colleges or universities attended, including your bachelor’s degree and any graduate coursework.

Curriculum: Course Options

Select 4 courses (12 credit hours) from the following list.

  • EDUC 530: Strategic Planning and Assessment in Higher Education – An examination of the fundamentals of assessment of learning outcomes and institutional effectiveness. Assessment is presented as an instrument to inform strategic planning and decision making in higher education.
  • EDUC 534: Advanced Leadership in Higher Education – An overview of best practices in higher education leadership, including a survey of leadership models, application of leadership models in staff development, policy and financial practices.
  • EDUC 538: Student Development Theory – This course provides an overview of theories of student development in higher education as it applies to the cognitive and psycho-social development of students and the influence of the college environment.
  • EDUC 539 Higher Education Administration – This course provides an overview of the process of organizing the personnel and financial resources needed to effectively meet student development and institutional goals and objectives. This course will introduce students to basic human and fiscal management concepts and skills.
  • EDUC 564: Strategic Enrollment Management – An overview of strategic enrollment management planning and practices in colleges and universities. In this course students will examine admission policies and practices, institutional positioning in student recruitment, fundamental principles of higher education marketing, as well as student success and retention strategies. Students will examine institutional budgeting, forecasting, data analytics and influences on higher education pricing and packaging of financial aid.
