Bio
Colonel George T Williams (UMSC) is professor of counselor education in The Citadel’s Zucker Family School of Education (ZFSOE) for the past 20+ years. He served as coordinator of The Citadel counselor education programs for 17 years (1997-2014). He led the initial CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) accreditation for The Citadel’s school counseling programs to earn the maximum eight years in 2005 and for recognition of continuous CACREP accreditation through October 31, 2021.
Dr. Williams is a nationally certified counselor and a licensed psychologist in the states of Minnesota and California. He has held numerous professional association leadership positions at the local, state, regional, and national levels, including SC state president (2001-2002, 2017-2018) of the South Carolina Counseling Association (SCCA), a state dividion of the American Counseling Association (ACA).
Dr. Williams’ career and life passion has been in education, counseling, psychology, human services, ministry, and serving others. He served 3 years as an elected school board member and officer (secretary 2017-2018, vice-chair 2018-2019) for James Island Charter High School (Charleston, SC). He continues serving as board member of the James Island Outreach Community Advisory Board (2018-2023). He is an active member and qualified speaker for The Gideons International ministry and currently serves as chaplin to The Gideons International, Charleston West Camp, having previously served as Camp treasurer and vice president.
Dr. Williams has over 40+ years’ professional education experience in the states of PA, OH, MN, LA, CA, and SC as either K-12 school counselor, college/university counselor, counselor educator/supervisor, or licensed psychologist (inpatient/outpatient). He has taught over 50 college/university courses at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree seeking levels. He has served 40+ years as a professional educator and administrator including 40+ years in higher education. Former full-time faculty positions held at California State University at Fullerton, including three years serving as Department of Counseling Chair; University of New Orleans; and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Governor Edwin W. Edwards appointed him as one of five members to the first Louisiana Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners in September 1987. He was the recipient of numerous professional awards including “Post-Secondary Counselor of the Year Award” for 1986-1987 from the Louisiana School Counselors Association, “Award for Contributions to Psychology in 1996” that is presented to one psychologist each year by the Inland Psychological Association, a chapter of the California Psychological Association. Dr. Williams served on several national professional journal editorial boards including, The Journal for Specialists in Group Work, Counselor Education and Supervision, and Counseling and Values. He is founding editor of the Journal of Counseling and Human Service Professions (May 1986) published by the Minnesota Association for Counseling and Development.
Since 1977, Dr. Williams regularly attends and frequently presents or serves as a panelist at the American Counseling Association (ACA) annual conference. He has presented over 200-refereed program/workshop/seminars at international/national, regional, and state professional conferences. He is a trained facilitator for Darkness to Light’s (D2L), Stewards of Children: Confronting Child Abuse prevention program for the past 17 years and given numerous D2L workshops at The Citadel to staff/employees/students and to professional school and mental health counselors throughout the state at annual conferences for the past several years.
George and his wife Nannette of 27 years are proud parents of five young adult/teen aged children ages 16-26, including four sons and one daughter. George is actively involved living daily by his Christian faith. He enjoys playing drums and “shouting out” sounds of joy as a team member and leader of his church praise and worship team. He enjoys quality time talking and being with family and close friends. He is a compassionate person committed to his Christian faith, his family, and his professional career in educating and helping others, and influencing this world in positive ways. He believes in treating all other people with unconditional love, inspiration, and encouragement.

Dr. Williams has authored numerous publications including two co-authored books, Confronting Malpractice: Legal and Ethical Dilemmas in Psychotherapy (1990, with Kenneth M. Austin and Mary E. Moline) and Documenting Psychotherapy: Essentials for Mental Health Practitioners (1998, with Mary E. Moline and Kenneth M. Austin).
