Welcome to the Modern Languages Requirements & Placement Exam!
Modern Languages Offerings and Requirements:
- The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers four languages: French, German, Spanish and Chinese (Asian Studies).
- Students will take two, three or four semesters in the same language. Students must consult with their department.
Dates: The Language Placement Test will be given online starting May 7th. Complete all placement tests by August 1st.
Students who wish to take the Placement Exam should take it as early as possible in order to complete registration for the fall semester.

- Select the appropriate language test
- Read instructions carefully
- Save answers
- Submit the test for grading

Do I need to take the Modern Language Placement Exam?
If you have studied French, German or Spanish for 3 units and want to continue in a higher-level course, you must take the Modern Language Placement Exam.
You do not need to take the placement exam if:

- You are planning to study Chinese (no placement exam is required for Chinese).
- You are beginning a new language you have never studied before.
- You are majoring in Engineering or Nursing (language study is not required for these majors).
Important:
Most students will take two, three, or four semesters in the same language. Please check your Degree Works or consult your major advisor to confirm your specific language requirements.
What is the Modern Language Placement Exam?
The Modern Language Placement Exam is an online test that allows students with previous experience in French, German, or Spanish to demonstrate their skills and potentially place into a higher-level course.
Please note:
No textbooks, dictionaries, translators or outside help are allowed during the exam. Honest completion of the exam ensures the best placement for your success.
The exam is optional and only needed if you want to test into a higher level course.
How much does the Modern Language Placement Exam cost?
The exam is free for all incoming Citadel students.
How long does the Modern Language Placement Exam take?
The test typically takes 30–60 minutes to complete.
When will I know my score?
You will see your score immediately after finishing the exam.
How is placement determined?
Placement is based on your exam score:
- 1–25: Enroll in a 102-level course.
- 26–31: Enroll in a 201-level course.
- 32–50: Contact Dr. Sara Fernandez Medina at fernandezs@citadel.edu to schedule an oral interview for possible higher placement.
If you choose not to take the placement exam, you will simply begin at a 102-level course.
