The Citadel is committed to fostering an environment where artificial intelligence tools can be used responsibly and ethically in teaching and learning. Our campus policy states that content generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) third-party services or sites without proper attribution or authorization is considered a form of plagiarism.
To provide clarity for both faculty and students, we’ve adopted a traffic light system for generative AI policies. These color-coded templates are provided to faculty to help them clearly articulate their generative AI course policies. It is the student’s responsibility to familiarize themselves with and adhere to the specific AI policy for each course and assignment.
Understanding Our AI Policy System Templates
Faculty may customize their course’s generative AI policy using one of the following “lights” as a guide:
🔴Red Light (No Generative AI Use Allowed)
This course specifically forbids the use of ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft CoPilot, Grammarly GenAI tools, or any other generative artificial intelligence (GAI) tools at all stages of the work process, including preliminary ones. This includes brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, or polishing your assignments. Violations of this policy will be considered plagiarism. Please draw your attention to the fact that different classes at The Citadel implement different AI policies, and it is the student’s responsibility to conform to expectations for each course and assignment before use. If you have any questions, please ask your professor for clarification.
🟡 Yellow Light (Generative AI Use Allowed with Restrictions)
In this course, the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft CoPilot, Grammarly GenAI tools, or any other GenAI tools, is permitted for specific stages of the work process, with clear limitations. Unless explicitly stated otherwise by the professor, the use of such tools is disallowed. When GenAI tools are permitted for specific tasks, their use must be appropriately acknowledged and cited. It is each student’s responsibility to critically evaluate the validity and applicability of any GenAI output used in submitted work, as you bear the final responsibility for its accuracy and integrity. Violations of this policy, including using GenAI tools when not explicitly permitted or failing to properly acknowledge their use, will be considered plagiarism. Please be aware that AI policies vary across courses at The Citadel, and it is your responsibility to understand and comply with the policy for each course and assignment. If you have any questions, please ask your professor for clarification.
🟢 Green Light (Generative AI Use Allowed)
In this course, the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools, such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft CoPilot, and Grammarly GenAI tools, is permitted at all stages of the work process, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and polishing your assignments. You are encouraged to utilize these tools to enhance your learning and productivity. However, the final submitted work should clearly demonstrate your understanding of the material and your ability to synthesize information. While direct copying and pasting of GenAI-generated content is discouraged, you are permitted to use it as a tool to develop your own ideas and writing. You will be asked to explain how you used GenAI tools in completing your assignments and to critically evaluate the output. Please remember that AI policies differ between courses at The Citadel, and it is your responsibility to understand and comply with the expectations for each course and assignment. If you have any questions, please ask your professor for clarification.
For faculty who wish to develop their own specific generative AI syllabus statement, we recommend utilizing Stanford’s worksheet for creating your AI course policy.
