Honors Program Application Process
The Citadel Honors Program is a highly competitive four-year program, and hence, selection for the program occurs during an applicant’s senior year of high school and after they have already received an admission offer from the College. It requires a separate application beyond the application or admission to the Citadel and comes after a student has been accepted.
The selection process is a holistic one which considers a student’s performance in high school, submitting an application, and undergoing a personal interview with Citadel faculty. We are looking for students who are committed to excellence and pushing their intellectual boundaries. Our ideal applicants are those with high potential that are driven towards success, but they are not always students who know exactly what they want to do yet on the other side of their four-year Citadel experience. We are not searching for “perfect” students, but those who can – and will – make the most of the support and opportunities that The Citadel Honors Program will present to them.
Invitation to Apply to the Honors Program
To be considered for an invitation to apply for prestigious Citadel programs and scholarships — including the Honors Program, the 1842 Scholars Program, and the highly-selective Citadel Scholar full academic scholarship — prospective students should fully and thoroughly complete their admissions application to The Citadel early during senior year. They must then complete a separate application process for these opportunities.
It is to the applicant’s advantage to supply as much high school and background information as possible in the admissions application to The Citadel. An initial screening of possible applicants involves an evaluation of high school academic performance, including course grades, classes taken, class rank, test scores(when provided), as well as high school activities and leadership roles. It is through this initial screening that students may be invited to apply for the Program.
Invitations to apply to these prestigious programs are issued by November and again by February for prospective students.
Opportunities for Current Cadets
During first year, interested cadets who did not apply for the Honors Program or were not chosen may express interest in joining the Program based on their academic and overall performance at The Citadel.
While there are limited spaces available each year, an interested cadet should email the director with: (1) a request to interview; and (2) a 1-2 page cover letter detailing your interest in the Honors Program and how the Program’s structure and opportunities align with your professional goals and your career at The Citadel.
If selected, cadets would begin participating in the Honors Program no later than the first semester of sophomore year and would be enrolled in the Honors Certificate pathway.
