{"id":1648,"date":"2022-11-15T13:35:32","date_gmt":"2022-11-15T18:35:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/veterans\/?page_id=1648"},"modified":"2026-01-20T18:59:43","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T23:59:43","slug":"maintaining-va-benefits","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/veterans\/maintaining-va-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"Maintaining VA Benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-procedures-for-maintaining-your-va-education-benefits-once-enrolled\">Procedures for Maintaining Your VA Education Benefits Once Enrolled<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>All Students:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once enrolled into classes each semester, you must submit a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/va.citadel.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> VA Certification Request form<\/a>. We can&#8217;t certify your enrollment to the VA without this form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MGIB-SR (Ch. 1606) &amp; MGIB-AD (Ch. 30) ONLY:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 1606 and Chapter 30 students must also verify their monthly enrollment with the VA every month through\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gibill.va.gov\/wave\/index.do\">VA&#8217;s online tool<\/a>, Ask VA, or by calling 1-877-823-2378 or 1-888-442-4551.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Post 9\/11 (Ch. 33) &amp; DEA (Ch. 35):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Post-9\/11 and DEA recipients need to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/veterans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/verification_howto.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">verify their monthly<\/a>\u00a0enrollment with the VA via text, email, Ask VA, or by calling 1-888-442-4551. Monthly payments will not be released from the VA without your monthly verification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If you have not submitted your VA Certification Request Form and been certified to the VA for the semester, you will not be able to verify your monthly enrollment with the VA.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reminders\">Reminders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\">Reminders are contained in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/veterans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/VA-Statement-of-Responsibilities.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Statement of Responsibilities for VA Education Benefits<\/a> that you accept and acknowledge when you request certification for your VA benefits every semester. Please contact our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/veterans\/contact-us\/\">team<\/a> if you have any questions.<\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Register for classes that are required for completion of an undergraduate or graduate degree-seeking program, minor, or subject certificate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make satisfactory progress towards the completion of my declared undergraduate or graduate degree-seeking program, minor, or subject certificate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inform the VSSC of any changes in academic status such as add\/drop of classes, completely withdrawing from classes, change of program\/major, academic dismissal, or concurrent enrollment at another institution. Withdrawing or dropping from classes may result in a debt with the VA and\/or the school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receiving an \u201cF\u201d grade due to non-attendance may result in an overpayment with the VA. You must adhere to The Citadel\u2019s Attendance Policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The VA does not pay for repeated courses if you have already received a passing grade for that course unless your degree plan requires a higher grade than you received.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receipt of a non-punitive grade will be reported to the VA and it could affect you benefits, in which case you may have to repay The Citadel. (Example grade: \u201cW\u201d).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Academic dismissal or probation will be reported to the VA if benefits were received for the course, in which case you may have to repay the benefits received.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-important-dates-for-veteran-students\">Important Dates for Veteran Students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\">Fall Semester<\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p>Ensure that all your <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/\">FAFSA<\/a> requirements are met before the Fall semester begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Submit your&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/va.citadel.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VA Certification Request Form<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If required (Ch. 1606, Ch. 30), continue to verify your monthly enrollment through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gibill.va.gov\/wave\/index.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WAVE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After registering for Spring Classes, submit your Spring VA Enrollment Request Form.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\">Spring Semester<\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p>New and continuing students can submit the FAFSA for the next academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensure that you have submitted a<a href=\"http:\/\/va.citadel.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;VA Certification Request Form<\/a>&nbsp;for Spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If required (Ch. 1606, Ch. 30), continue to verify your monthly enrollment through<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gibill.va.gov\/wave\/index.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;WAVE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Registration for Summer and Fall of next academic year opens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/root\/finaid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;Financial Aid office<\/a>&nbsp;for additional information regarding financial aid during Summer.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\">Summer Semester Terms<\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p>SC Army National Guard:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/veterans\/va-educational-benefits\/sc-national-guard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SC CAP applications<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/root\/national-guard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;<\/a>available from June 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;to August 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;(NO exceptions) for the entire upcoming academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National Guard and Reservists should complete their Federal Tuition Assistance well in advance of the first day of Fall classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/root\/treasurer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">summer bill<\/a>&nbsp;deadline dates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fall Bills available around July.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Procedures for Maintaining Your VA Education Benefits Once Enrolled All Students: Once enrolled into classes each semester, you must submit a\u00a0 VA Certification Request form.
