What is Ch. 30 MGIB?
The Montgomery GI Bill is an Active Duty Educational Assistance Program, also known as MGIB or Chapter 30, that provides educational benefits to Veterans and Service members. Students receive benefit payments on a monthly basis.
You may qualify for these benefits if you:
- Entered active duty for the first time on or after July 1, 1985.
- Participated in the pay reduction program (pay reduced by $100 per month for the first 12 months).
- Served honorably for at least two years.

- If you are also eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, it is strongly recommended that you discuss with a military education officer (ESO) or with The Citadel’s School Certifying Official the potential advantages of transferring to the Post-9/11 program. You may also view a comparison chart.
Documentation Required for Ch. 30 Benefits
Please submit completed forms or document copies to The Citadel’s Veterans Services Office, according to your circumstances.
If you have never applied for benefits, submit:
- Application for VA Benefits (22-1990)
- VA Enrollment Certification Request
- Verify your enrollment each month on WAVE.
If you have had a one-year break in attendance at The Citadel, or if you used your benefit at another institution, submit:
- Change of Program or Place of Training (22-1995)
- VA Enrollment Certification Request
- Verify your enrollment each month on WAVE.
If you received your benefit at The Citadel within the last year, submit:
- VA Enrollment Certification Request
- Verify your enrollment each month on WAVE.
Chapter 30 Benefit Guidelines
- You will receive up to 36 months of education benefits through chapter 30, MGIB. This can be used towards degree and Graduate Certificate programs. Non-degree seeking students are not eligible to receive VA benefits.
- Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty.
- Benefits are paid to the student on a monthly basis while attending school. Current payment rates can be found on the VA’s website.
