{"id":810,"date":"2022-07-28T14:02:09","date_gmt":"2022-07-28T18:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/ssm\/?page_id=810"},"modified":"2023-06-08T16:28:01","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T20:28:01","slug":"council-csmc","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/ssm\/council-csmc\/","title":{"rendered":"Citadel Science and Mathematics Council (CSMC)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Citadel Science and Mathematics Council (CSMC) enjoys members who are alumni and friends of The Citadel.&nbsp; Many are distinguished in their fields and all are dedicated to supporting and advancing the programs and initiatives of the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics.&nbsp;In addition to providing their own sage advice to the Dean, Department Heads, and Center Directors, members are charged with developing a larger network or friends, followers and supporters to accomplish the School\u2019s mission critical initiatives and work. &nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-swain-family-school-of-science-and-mathematics-dean-s-council\">Swain Family School of&nbsp;Science and Mathematics Dean\u2019s Council<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The members of the Citadel Science and Mathematics Council are very distinguished in their life and careers which provide great insight to the Council meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">COL Charles R. Ball, (USA, Ret.) &#8217;76<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Ball has 40+ years\u2019 experience leading and managing programs and organizations supporting DoD, from both customer (as a PM in the Army) and provider (industry) standpoints. He is currently serving as the Director of Operations Support for ECS\u2019 Health IT and Cyber Solutions Business Unit with responsibility for identifying and capturing news business as well as training and mentoring capture managers and PMs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. James D. Bearden, III, MD &#8217;65<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Vice President of Clinical Research for Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System; Managing Physician for the nationally recognized Gibbs Cancer Center; and Director of the Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Clinical Oncology and Hematology; he is the first Board-certified oncologist in South Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">William H Bowers MD &#8217;60<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>He served on the governing body of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and was that organizations first Sterling&nbsp;Bunnell&nbsp;International Traveling Fellow. He has published over 60 peer reviewed scientific articles and has written several books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lt Col Robert Campbell, Jr., Ph.D., USAFR Ret. 1987<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Douglas M. Carnes, Ph.D. 1964<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Carnes left the corporate environment in the mid 1980&#8217;s and started Carnes Communications, Inc., which serviced the pharmaceutical industry developing and delivering educational programs to sales representatives, and health care professionals. Since his retirement, Dr. Carnes has continued to serve as a consultant to the medical communications industry. He currently teaches Strategic Management for The Citadel School of Business.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Henry Cross, Ph. D., 2015<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mr. Randall C. Finn, 1998<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ms. Lauren A. Fleming-Melton, 2010<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Lauren Fleming-Melton is a 2010 graduate of The Citadel\u2019s corps of cadets. While at The Citadel, she was a student athlete on the track and field team majoring in Health and Human Performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CAPT Reza Ghaffari, Ph.D., USN, Ret. 1980<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Electrical Engineering;&nbsp;Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1986. He is presently working toward his Doctoral degree in Engineering with targeted dissertation in Cybersecurity Risk Assessment at George Washington University<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Kevin Harbol, Ph. D., 1981<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Ph.D. University of Kentucky. Dr. Harbol has had a distinguished career in pharmaceutical\/biotechnology. Currently he is the Senior Group Leader of Mass Spectrometry at Omeros Corporation in Seattle, WA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Alexander Holland, III, Ph. D., 1964<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Holland received a B.S. from The Citadel (1964) and his M.S. (1972) and Ph.D. (1974) degrees from the University of&nbsp;South Carolina.&nbsp; He held&nbsp;positions in the environmental consulting industry (Vice-President&nbsp;Versar&nbsp;Inc.&nbsp;1987-1991),&nbsp;state&nbsp;government&nbsp;(Director SC Department of Natural Resources Marine Resources Research Institute 1991-2001) and federal&nbsp;government&nbsp;(Director of NOAA\u2019s Hollings Marine Laboratory and Center of Excellence for Oceans and Human Health 2001-2008).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. David O. Keyser, Ph. D., 1981<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>He has thirteen years\u2019 experience as a US Navy Research Physiologist (\u201991 \u2013 2004) and served as Chair of the Diving and Experimental Physiology Department, NMRC. During this time, he was&nbsp;a Principal Investigator responsible for ~$10M of research funds working&nbsp;on a number of research efforts predominantly targeting Special Operations Forces optimization&nbsp;of performance. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. D. Michael Johns, Ph. D., 1972<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Susan Johnson, Ph. D. 1998<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Susan Johnson, Ph.D. is the Director of Health Promotion at the Medical University of South Carolina. She received her undergraduate degree from UNC Charlotte, master\u2019s degree from The Citadel and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Col. Boykin B. Jordan Jr. USAF Ret. 1984<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mr. Stephen J. Lawler 1982<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Steve Lawler became president of the North Carolina Hospital Association in July 2017. With close to 40 years of experience as a health system leader, his career has spanned experiences ranging from president of one of the smallest hospitals in North Carolina (a national rural health system model) to leading one of the largest health systems in the state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Samuel P. McManus, Ph.D., 1960<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mr. Richard F. Nelson 2004<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Nelson began his professional career in 1986 at the Naval Air Test Center in PAX River MD working on the E2-C aircraft in target detection &amp; tracking as well as ECM &amp; ECCM systems performance.&nbsp; In 1996, Rich opened an office for a small company that eventually became a part of the Northrop Grumman Corporation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. John M. Palms, Sr. Ph. D., &nbsp;1958<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>John Palms is a distinguished physicist, president emeritus of the University of South Carolina, and of Georgia State University, and member of many corporate boards and government committees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mr. A. Kean Phillips, 2004<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Phillips graduated from The Citadel in 2004 with a degree in biology.\u202f After graduation he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps where he served for four years.\u202f Post service he attained a master\u2019s degree in nurse anesthesia from the Medical University of South Carolina.\u202f He is\u202fcurrently\u202femployed as a nurse anesthetist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cadet Jaret Price (HHP 2022)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Cadet Jaret Price (HHP \u201922)&nbsp;is from&nbsp;Aiken, South Carolina.&nbsp;He&nbsp;is a Health and Human Performance Major who is on an Army 3-year AD Scholarship.&nbsp;He&nbsp;is working towards commissioning as a second lieutenant in the active duty Medical Service Corps. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. James R. Pugh, Sr. Ph. D., 1985<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>UNC Chapel Hill &#8217;90. He is currently President of Harrell Industries<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mr. Trent K. Purcell, 1980<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Trent K. Purcell graduated from The Citadel in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics. Upon graduation he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Andrew J. Reynolds, Sr., MD, 1992<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Andrew Reynolds graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine in 1996.&nbsp; He works in Sumter, SC and specializes in Internal Medicine.&nbsp; Dr. Reynolds is affiliated with Tuomey Regional Medical Center.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mr. Paul N. Rhyne, Sr., 1993<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Rhyne is a co-founder LumeNXT, which is a privately held surgical device company pioneering the utilization of intracavity light emitting diode (LED) illumination.&nbsp;&nbsp;Before LumeNXT, Rhyne joined the pre-revenue, venture-backed startup, Intarcia Therapeutics, Inc.Prior to Intarcia, Rhyne held critical positions within the training, marketing, and commercial field teams at the Coloplast Corporation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Marc F. Settin, Ph. D., 1980<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Settin started Barker Industries in 1987 developing and producing high purity solvents and organometallic compounds for the global marketplace. Current products include materials for antibiotic production, modifiers for air bag deployment, and specific metal catalysts for the pharmaceutical industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mr. Jeffrey C. Stevenson, 1991<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Mr. Jeff Stevenson is a \u201991 Citadel grad, obtaining the BS degree in Mathematics. He has earned an MS in Systems Engineering from Georgia Tech and pursued further studies at Stanford. &nbsp;He worked with various defense contractors and the FBI before joining Google. Mr. Stevenson has been instrumental in our recent collaborations with Google, from faculty funding to develop new android-based courses to computer donations to the physics department to the financial support of the Trebuchet outreach event to serving on our Low Country STEM Collaborative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Christopher C. Swain, MD, 1981<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Swain attended the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and completed his OB\/GYN residency training at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. With his brother David, Chris provided the resources to establish the Swain Nursing Department at The Citadel. Dr. Swain currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for The Citadel Foundation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mr. James M. Whetstone, 1960<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While a cadet, James Harrison Whetstone was a Gold Star student and a member of the Summerall Guards, the elite precision drill platoon. Following his graduation in 1960 with a degree in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/root\/politicalscience\">political science<\/a>, he began a career in the textile industry, eventually becoming the corporate director overseeing the global operations of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unifi.com\/\">Unifi Inc.<\/a>, the largest producer of textile yarns in the U. S. and one of the largest international companies of this type. As a senior leader there, Whetstone sought opportunities to mentor and help develop junior colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dr. Darin T.
