{"id":689,"date":"2022-07-21T11:12:46","date_gmt":"2022-07-21T15:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/ssm\/?page_id=689"},"modified":"2026-08-18T13:06:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T17:06:00","slug":"award-criteria","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/ssm\/award-criteria\/","title":{"rendered":"Award Criteria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-swain-family-school-of-science-and-mathematics-student-award-undergraduate-and-graduate\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics Student Award: Undergraduate and Graduate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This award recognizes an all-around outstanding final-year student in the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics (SFSSM).&nbsp; Three total awards acknowledge students and are presented annually in the following categories:&nbsp;<strong>one<\/strong>&nbsp;South Carolina Corps of Cadets student,&nbsp;<strong>one<\/strong>&nbsp;Citadel Graduate College student (including evening undergraduate students), and&nbsp;<strong>one<\/strong>&nbsp;Veteran\/Active Duty student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-minimum-qualifications\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minimum Qualifications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Must be receiving a degree in a program housed within the SFSSM.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GPA of 3.5 or greater.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GPR<\/strong> Scoring Guidelines: Score 5 if GPR is equal to or greater than 3.9; score 4 if GPR is 3.8-3.9; Score 3 if GPR is 3.7-3.8; Score 2 if 3.6-3.7; Score 1 if GPR is less than 3.6.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other Academic Achievements <\/strong>may include consecutive Gold Stars, research, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, internships, study abroad, and other academic awards and honors, etc. Score 1 point for each activity up to a total of 5.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extracurricular Activities<\/strong> may include capstone projects, leadership accomplishments, participation in departmental and school activities\/clubs, Summerall Guards, sports teams, etc. Score 1 point for each activity up to a total of 5.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Service to Community and SFSSM\/The Citadel<\/strong> should be identified and explained in the nomination (e.g. volunteer activities during breaks, tutoring, helping with CASM Banquet, etc.) Score 1 point for each activity up to a total of 5.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Other<\/strong> category provides the Awards Committee members the opportunity to include character, judgment and other important attributes into their evaluation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All criteria are weighted equally. <strong>(Equal weighting of criteria needs to be debated by the committee and a consensus opinion of the securing process agreed to.)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nominations should include a resume (maximum of two pages, 10 point font minimum) and a supporting letter (500 words or less) that describes why the individual should be selected as the SFSSM Outstanding student.&nbsp; Candidates competitive for the award will demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, service to others, and participation in high-impact practice extracurricular activities.&nbsp; Departments may nominate&nbsp;<strong>no more than one student<\/strong>&nbsp;in each of the above categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond GPA, examples of outstanding academic performance might include Gold Stars, peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations, among others.&nbsp; Leadership is not limited to that inside The Citadel; exemplary civic and community leadership is encouraged.&nbsp; High-impact practices include undergraduate research, internships, capstone projects, service learning, and study abroad, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-please-visit-the-form-to-submit-your-nominees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/ssm\/casm-award-nomination-form\/\">Please visit the form to submit your nominees.<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deadline: Last day of Fall Semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selection process:&nbsp;Nominations will be made by each department head or their designee.&nbsp; Review of nominations will be accomplished by the Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics Recognition Committee and a recommendation of the most outstanding student in each category will be made to the Dean SFSSM by the second Friday in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Recipients of the most outstanding SFSSM student in each category will be recognized at the annual Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics awards ceremony and receive a certificate and a check for $250. Departmental nominees that are nominated for this award but not selected as the most outstanding student award will also be recognized at the banquet and receive a certificate recognizing their accomplishments.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-casm-early-career-faculty-award\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The CASM Early Career Faculty Award<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose of this award is to recognize a current non-tenured SFSSM faculty member who has demonstrated sustained excellence and distinction in teaching, scholarship, research and related creative activities, professional service and leadership. This award highlights the impactful contributions of faculty who are in the &#8220;early career stage&#8221; of their academic careers and who exemplify a strong commitment to students, the institution and their discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nominations must be made by a current faculty member and must include a nomination letter from the individual submitting the nomination and a current resume\/vitae of the nominee, a support letter from the respective Department Head, and a minimum of one support letter from a current or past student. Additional support letters are encouraged.&nbsp; The nomination and support letters should describe how the nominated faculty member meets the criteria below and should include specific examples of teaching excellence, student engagement, institutional contributions, and classroom innovation.&nbsp; All criteria are weighted equally. All criteria are weighted equally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Awardees will receive an award and be recognized at the annual Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics awards ceremony during Corps week.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-nbsp-the-nbsp-casm-distinguished-alumni-and-friends-award\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;The&nbsp;CASM Distinguished Alumni and Friends award<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose of this award is to recognize Distinguished Alumni and Friends of SFSSM\/The Citadel who demonstrated exceptional accomplishments and leadership in their profession, community, industry, The Citadel, and SFSSM while having a positive impact on mankind and serving as a role model for others.&nbsp; Criteria to be considered include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nominations of exceptional alumni must include a nomination letter from the individual submitting the nomination and a current resume\/vitae of the recipient.&nbsp; Additional support letters are encouraged.&nbsp; The nomination and support letters should describe how the nominee meets the criteria below and should include specific examples of professional leadership and achievement, service, and commitment to SFSSM and The Citadel.&nbsp;The inductee must either have a background in or contributed to a discipline relevant to SFSSM. We encourage nominations of exceptional alumni who are early in their career (within 15 years of graduating from The Citadel); these nominations will be evaluated separately from the more established nominees. At most, one early career inductee will be selected each year.&nbsp; Alumni and members of the CSMC and SFSSM faculty are&nbsp;requested to submit nominations for the distinguished alumni and friends award to&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:ssm@citadel.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ssm@citadel.edu<\/a> and forwarded to the Chairperson of the Recognition Committee. All criteria are weighted equally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Awardees will receive an award and be recognized at the annual Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics awards ceremony during Corps week.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-casm-posthumous-alumni-award\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">CASM Posthumous Alumni Award<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose of this award is to recognize Posthumous SFSSM Alumni who: (1) exhibited exceptional accomplishments and leadership in their profession, community, and industry; (2) had a positive impact on mankind; (3) served as a role model for others; and (4) exhibited strong support for the Citadel and\/or SFSSM.\u00a0 Individuals nominated for this award must have a background in or have contributed to a discipline relevant to SFSSM.\u00a0 A maximum of 1-2 Posthumous Alumni Awards can be made annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criteria for this award includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Professional Accomplishments and Leadership<\/strong>: The recipient exhibited exceptional professional accomplishments and leadership in a discipline related to a SFSSM Department<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Role Model and Mentor<\/strong>: The recipient served as a role model and mentor for others during their professional and personal life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Integrity and Community Service<\/strong>: The recipient exhibited integrity and a commitment to community service and actions that improve the lives of others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Core Values<\/strong>: The recipient exhibited the core values of The Citadel (duty, honor, and respect) in their professional and personal lives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Support of SFSSM and The Citadel<\/strong>: The recipient displayed a strong connection to and support for The Citadel and SFSSM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family of posthumous award winners will be honored at the CASM Celebration and will receive a resolution honoring the awardee.\u00a0 The individuals developing posthumous nominations will work with the Awards Committee to develop the resolution. Nominations for this award must be made by a current or past CASM member, Citadel alumnus, or SFSSM faculty member and must include a nomination letter and a resume or biography for the nominee.\u00a0 Support letters from SFSSM\/CASM alumni are encouraged.\u00a0The nomination and support letters should describe how the nominated individual meets the above criteria and should summarize the individual\u2019s commitment to professional excellence, the Citadel\u2019s core values, and service to others. Submission Deadline: Nominations for this award may be submitted at any time.\u00a0 Nominations received by 30 June will be considered for the following CASM Banquet. Nominations should be submitted digitally to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:ssm@citadel.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ssm@citadel.edu<\/a> and forwarded to the Chairperson of the Recognition Committee. Questions should be addressed to the Chairperson of the Recognition Committee. \u00a0The review of nominations will be accomplished by the CASM Awards Selection Committee and recommendation for the award winners made to the SFSSM Dean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-nbsp-casm-recognition-committee\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The&nbsp;CASM Recognition Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Recognition Committee for all of the CASM awards is a subcommittee of the Citadel Science and Mathematics Council. The composition of the Recognition Committee should include CASM members (6-7) representing as many SFSSM disciplines and department as practical and should include 2-3 senior SFSSM faculty members (tenured faculty and\/or Department Heads).
