Welcome to the School of Humanities & Social Sciences at The Citadel.

Becoming a principled leader starts with studying the humanities and social sciences. By learning in our disciplines, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the richness and diversity of the human experience. This knowledge will help you connect with people from different cultures, think critically and creatively about the world, solve tough problems facing humanity, and act nobly on behalf of something bigger than yourself. Majoring in one of our disciplines will transform your mind and viewpoint, enabling you to become the person and leader you truly want to be and follow a path toward success and fulfillment.

Our School has seven academic departments, offering majors in Criminal Justice, English, History, Intelligence & Security Studies, Modern Languages (Spanish, French, and German), Political Science, and Psychology. In addition, we offer master’s degrees in Applied History, Military History, Psychology (Clinical Counseling), Psychology (School Psychology), International Political and Military Affairs, Intelligence and Security Studies, and Social Science.

Our talented and dedicated faculty distinguish this School from so many others. The School employs more than 70 full-time professors and a dedicated reserve of part-time instructors, all experts and/or practitioners in their fields. Moreover, the rigorous curriculum they have designed will help you find your path, train for your career, grow into a lifelong learner, and fulfill your personal and professional goals. There are so many opportunities available in our disciplines; no single list here would capture the wide variety of career paths available to our students. Email or ask any one of our faculty, and they’ll open a world of possibilities as you prepare for the next stage of your life.

Know also that the School of Humanities and Social Sciences continues to innovate and excel. We have opened the new Capers Hall, our new home since 2023, a 100,000-square-foot structure complete with state-of-the-art classrooms, collaborative spaces, active learning classrooms, a mock courtroom, a cyber warfare lab and range, a fine arts studio, and a national security classroom. The building features an art gallery, an open-air courtyard with a fountain, an atrium adorned with a giant American flag, a student lounge area equipped with televisions, and numerous spaces for discussion, collaboration, and learning. Capers Hall is the most impressive and impactful building on campus, and it will be your home in the School of Humanities & Social Sciences.

Take a look at our undergraduate and graduate degree offerings by clicking on the links to the left. If you’re interested in joining our School, don’t hesitate to reach out to our faculty and staff. They’re happy to chat with you about opportunities.

Thanks for visiting!

As ever,

COL Brian Madison Jones, Ph.D.
Dean and Professor
The Citadel

A Message from the Dean Hello!
