Lucy Beckham earned her Master’s and Specialist’s degrees from the Citadel in school administration. Named the 2010 MetLife/ NASSP National High School Principal of the Year, Mrs. Beckham is known for her visionary leadership and commitment to excellence in every area of school life. For the past 16 years she has served as principal of Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Although no entrance tests are required, Wando consistently proves that a large, public, non-magnet high school serving diverse students can produce outstanding results and earn numerous state and national awards.

Mrs. Beckham’s knowledge of high school reform and best practices is matched by her professionalism, collaborative leadership, and determination to provide the highest quality education for her students. She is relentless in her determination to do the right things for students and staff and readily engages stakeholders to ensure they feel ownership for the school and fully support Wando’s mission. Her educational career includes 16 years in the classroom as a high school math teacher and 21 years as a school administrator. She currently leads a staff of more than 300 and a student body of more than 3600.

In 2010 Ms. Beckham received South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto. Other professional honors include an honorary doctorate from the College of Charleston where she was also named Alumna of the Year, and her induction in to The Citadel School of Education Hall of Fame. During her career, she has been named South Carolina Principal or Administrator of the Year by three different organizations- the South Carolina School Administrators Association, the South Carolina Association of Student Councils, and the Southern Interscholastic Press Association. She has been the recipient of the Septima P. Clark Award for Excellence in Education by the Trident Urban League and the Barbara H. James 2020 Vision Pacesetter Award presented by the S.C. Office of Career and Technology Education. Mrs. Beckham is also a former Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Beckham is a native of Fountain Inn, South Carolina and was educated in the Greenville County public schools. She attended Presbyterian College and the College of Charleston where she earned a BS in mathematics. She continued her education with her Master’s and Specialist’s degrees from the Citadel in school administration. Lucy Beckham comes from a family of educators and is very proud that her daughter and son and their spouses are all now in the family business of education.
