The Citadel’s fees will increase an average of 7.4 percent
The Citadel Board of Visitors has approved an increase in tuition and educational fees for 2007-2008. Mandatory tuition, auxiliary and college fees will increase an average of 7.4 percent for the Corps of Cadets and 5.4 percent for the College of Graduate and Professional Studies.
The increase will offset increased operating expenses such as the replacement of an antiquated information technology system, personnel expenses and increased staffing.
Mandatory fees, which include registration, tuition, college fees and athletic fees, will increase from $7,168 to $7,735 for in-state students and from $17,487 to $19,291 for out-of-state students. (Note: These figures are comparable to the mandatory fee comparisons for other colleges.)
The Citadel’s cost to parents and students – “all in” costs - also includes auxiliary fees for room, board, laundry/dry cleaning and infirmary use. Auxiliary fees also cover costs for uniforms, books and living expenses, such as haircuts and toiletries. While other colleges may not collect fees such as these up front, they are comparable to things students would pay for over the course of a year at other colleges or universities.
“The college has few alternatives for raising revenue,” said Curt Holland, vice president for finance and business affairs. “But the good news is that the cost of attending The Citadel remains well below the state average. If you compare the total costs of going to The Citadel with the total costs parents have to pay to fully support their child in another college, as reported by U.S. News and World Report, The Citadel remains a best value.”
With the approved increase, the total “all in” costs for 2007-2008 for the Corps of Cadets is as follows. Numbers in parenthesis are for the 2006-2007 academic year.
