Dr. Scott Curtis

Dr. Scott Curtis is the Dr. John Lining Professor of Physics and Director of the Lt. Col. James B. Near Jr., USAF, ’77 Center for Climate Studies at The Citadel. Dr. Curtis received his Ph.D. in Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences with a minor in Computer Science and his Masters in Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences both from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He received his Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences with a minor in Physics from the University of Virginia.

Some of his awards include the Honored Instructor Award in 2019, Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences Advancement Council Distinguished Professor of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (2017 to 2022), and Center for Sustainability Outstanding Affiliate Faculty Member (2013 to 2014). Further, he has been award several grants, including an EPA grant for “Predicting Drinking Water Contamination from Extreme Weather to Reduce Early Life Contaminant Exposures", US Coastal Research Program grant for “Estuarine Bluff Shorelines: Inter-Relation Between Erosion Processes and Development, and Vulnerability,” and NOAA Coastal and Ocean Climate Applications (COCA) and Sectoral Applications Research Program (SARP) joint competition grant for “Preparing for, Responding to, and Mitigating Compound Water Hazards for Resilient Rural Communities.”
