ROTC Program

All cadets are required to enroll in and pass an ROTC course for every semester in which they are enrolled at The Citadel until they have completed their first two years. While every cadet must successfully complete a course in one of the three ROTC programs each semester, cadets are not required to enroll in any ROTC commissioning program nor are they required to accept a commission should it be offered.

Part A:

Foreign Language Requirement and Placement Exam The Citadel requires two semesters in the same language for most majors except engineering, education, and nursing. Some departments might require three or more semesters. The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers four languages in which you may fulﬁll the general education requirement. If you wish to continue with the French, German, or Spanish you studied in high school, you must take The Citadel’s Foreign Language Placement Exam (FLPE). Your score will determine the level at which you will continue your foreign language study at The Citadel. If you wish to continue with Chinese you studied in high school, The Chinese Placement Exam will be conducted on campus through an interview with a Chinese professor during the advising period.

Students who do continue with the same language studied in High School cannot start below the 102 level (second semester of elementary French, Chinese, German or Spanish).

Summer School Reading Requirement

In the fall of their freshman year, cadets are required to enroll in LDRS 101: First Year Experience which is designed to facilitate their transition to The Citadel. For this course, there is a summer reading assignment, and freshman students must purchase and read the book A Few Good Men by Aaron Sorkin prior to matriculation day. This reading assignment will provide opportunities for discussions about ethical concepts and issues during orientation and throughout the fall semester. Because this book is considered a textbook, The Citadel Bookstore has ordered the books for freshmen to purchase. Therefore, students can visit the following link to purchase their book, https://www.bkstr.com/thecitadelstore/home. In the “Enter Your Search Details”, please enter “Few Good Men”.
