Museum exhibit features early football years

A special exhibit in The Citadel Museum provides a nostalgic look at The Early Years of Citadel Football.

In 1904, The Board of Visitors approved the cadets’ petition to play football at The Citadel. The first game was played on October 14, 1905, against Porter Military Academy. The score for this first game was a tie 0-0!

Some items on display include the 1904 petition to play football, photographs of the undefeated 1906 team and the cadet who coined the term "Bulldog."

Cartoons and photographs in the exhibit highlight the cadets’ enthusiasm for the game. Lists of all Citadel football coaches, games and scores from 1905 to 2006 are featured as well as a list of honors and awards from 1959 to 2005.

The museum is open 2 to 5 p.m, Sunday through Friday, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
