Gail Silverman, J.D.

Adjunct Professor
Joined The Citadel Faculty: August 2012

Ms. Silverman earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Clemson University in 1971. After teaching elementary special education for two years, she began law school at the University of the Pacific, in Sacramento, California. Following the award of her Juris Doctor from UOP, McGeorge School of Law in 1976 she worked for the California Attorney General until being commissioned in the United States Air Force where she served as a member of the Judge Advocate General's Department. She left active duty in 1982 and retired from the Air Force Reserve in 2004 as a colonel. She has been admitted to practice in California, South Carolina, and North Carolina. 

Following her active military service, Gail entered private practice in North Carolina, concentration on domestic relations and general civil litigation. Ms. Silverman later returned to government service serving, first as an attorney-advisor at Charleston AFB. She then joined the Navy's Office of General Counsel. Her client activities were Charleston Naval Shipyard, SUPSHIP Charleston, and later Naval Weapons Station, Charleston. For seventeen years she served as the senior counsel for Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, Atlantic in Charleston, South Carolina, Her duties included the supervision of a government legal office whose practice was primarily in the areas of federal contracts and personnel law. As a certified mediator in the Navy's Alternative Dispute Resolution Program and a Mentor Mediator, she adjusted her focus from litigation to conflict resolution with noted success. Ms. Silverman retired from federal service in 2011 to pursue her interest in teaching, mediation and conflict resolution.

Ms. Silverman's interest in teaching continues, and she has taught many law-related courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Currently she is an adjunct professor for the Citadel's Graduate College.
