Dr. Jennifer Balmer

Dr. Jennifer Balmer is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology. Dr. Balmer graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a B.S. in Marine Biology and the Medical University of South Carolina with her Ph.D. in Marine Biomedical and Environmental Sciences. Before arriving at The Citadel, she worked as a research scientist with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Mote Marine Laboratory (MML). She also spent time as a science journalist, publishing in various online outlets including Science, Audubon, and NPR.

She currently teaches a diverse range of medical and environmental courses at The Citadel, including Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Global Environmental Change, Environmental Citizenship, and a freshman seminar, entitled ‘Rewilding Earth’. Her research interests include understanding human impacts, such as environmental contaminants and climate change, on the natural environment and biota. In additional to conducting independent research with students, she continues to work closely with the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) to synthesize and communicate emerging polar science to key stakeholders and policy-makers.
