The Citadel\u2019s first female MBA graduate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After reading an article about The Citadel\u2019s celebration of 25 years of female cadet graduates, Brian Tucker, Ph.D.<\/a>, MBA and degree transfer program advisor, was inspired to learn about the first woman to earn an MBA at The Citadel. With a little help from archivist Tessa Updike<\/a>, Tucker learned that Capt. Dorothy \u201cDottie\u201d Nazarenus, USN, Ret., a native of Denver, Colorado, holds the distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nazarenus was born in 1938. She earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in music from the University of Denver. Following her undergraduate studies, she attended the U.S. Naval Women\u2019s Officer School and became a Naval officer. \u201cThis career decision afforded her service opportunities and travel to Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines,\u201d said Tucker. \u201cHer persuasive spirit led to leadership opportunities in service, and she even attempted to recruit other female students.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1970s, Nazarenus continued her studies at The Citadel, earning her MBA in 1975. In 2023, Nazarenus, who dedicated her life to service and adventure, passed away at the age of 85.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven though she is gone, Capt. Nazarenus represents how diverse and ground-breaking our graduate population is and continues to be,\u201d said Tucker. \u201cShe represents The Citadel\u2019s core values\u2014honor, duty and respect\u2014tenfold.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
