Retired Army Reserve General Meets with Cadets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When retired Maj. Gen. Jami C. Shawley, U.S. Army Reserve, came to Charleston for a speaking engagement with the World Affairs Council of Charleston, she asked to meet with cadets. Shawley recently served as director for defense policy and strategy and as acting senior director for Africa for the National Security Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shawley met with intelligence, political science and cybersecurity classes on March 24. She also had lunch with 23 upper-class ROTC cadets, sharing leadership lessons on leading oneself first, taking responsibility for failures rooted in poor communication and always pushing toward the next challenge. She also took part in a roundtable discussion with students who participated in the Kenya Medical Camp, led by Dr. Sarah Imam<\/a>, last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She concluded her visit with a one-on-one meeting with Cadet Lt. Col. Lucy McArthur, 1st Battalion commander, who briefed the general on her Distinguished Scholars Project. McArthur, who has traveled on undergraduate research grants to Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda, is exploring how a classical curriculum with a community-driven approach can help empower women in East Africa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
